Confusion over light change

I'm a bit confused. While that's nothing new, I'm confused about a growing question as well

 

I've read somewhere in here, that people put their seedlings straight into 12/12/ conditions. While that sounds reasonable to me, I read somewhere else, that putting a plant to 12/12 before pre-flowering can cause hermies. It was explained that the plant thinks it is "missing out" on some pollen and causes it to become a hermie so it can self polinate if necessary. To me that sounds perfectly reasonable as well.

 

So what's the story? 12/12 before pre-flower or not? Or does a seedling not care if it doesn't know any other state than 12/12?

Starting a plant in 12/12 works if you have a long flowering sativa that may take ages to mature and may grow very tall if vegged for too long. It is also great if you need pot quickly as it forces the plant to flower straight away. The bottom line is that you have buds quicker, plants are smaller, and you have less yield.

 

I can't think of any reason a plant would hermie because of being started under 12 hours of light. Sounds like a myth to me. I have done this on several occasions and never had problems.

Sorry, didn't make myself clear. It didn't say you can't start a plant 12/12. It said force flowering a plant before pre-flowering may cause the plant to turn into a hermie (and seedlings living under 12/12 conditions are certainly force flowered).

 

The explanation given was that the plant can experience "stress related sex problems" because it "thinks" it is flowering too late and it's chances for reproduction are slim. That's why it turns into a hermie so it can self polinate. (Cannabis Grow Bible, 4th edition, Page 177 "Problems with 12/12")
