LIGHT BULB ANGLE

Recommended Posts

A while ago, a member here grew a sensational grow of Heavy Duty Fruity. About half way through (or later into the grow?) he changed the direction the bulb was in and spoke of the amazing difference it made immediately to how many flowers were being put on every day. He was hanging a HPS bulb vertically , and then changed to horizontal.

I'm using mine horizontal and will continue to, but seeing as my grows have always been pretty much had the floor space of a square, I never considered which way the light emitted in so far as the direction the bulb pointed.

I'm currently growing (still setting up) into a small room about 1400mm x 800mm. I'm using a 1Kwatt light, so I know I could point it any way I wanted and it'd probably be alright, but for max. eficiency, should I point the bulb long ways in relation the rectangle, or straight across it?

I would have always gone with straight across it, thinking the light will throw off the length of the bulb and further out that way..but I don't know why I believe that. maybe I read it somewhere many moons ago? maybe someone told me? Bottom line is I have never really considerd it and seeing as setting up the light in this small space properly will be a bit of a pain in the arse, I want to know I'm putting it in getting the best coverage it will do.

Thanks heaps all.

PS. the member who changed the way he hung his bulb changed user names too, and was growing out a strain I dearly would have loved to see finished. If you're reading this and wouldn't mind, could you send me a private message? I'd like to ask some questions about that strain and you did a sensational job with it.

:sleepyhead: IF you hang the globe horizontal it will penetrate light deeper into the canopy, and if you hang it vertical it will spread light further across the top of the canopy. In a room the size you are working with Rob I would go horizontal. Vertical is more suited to a large room with multiple lights.

Thanks Mongy, I appreciate the reply. But I'm wondering more in relation to which way should the bulb "point". I'll "lay" the bulb horizontal, just wondering which way the bulb throws light further in what direction.

It's probably really bloody obvious and something I should be embarressed to ask, but you know, ...like I said, I've never had a floor lay out except square before now so it's something I haven't ever looked into.

cheers

Thanks guys, that's the problem alright. I have been runniong the light that way in there, must have been something I retained a long time back reading somehwere. but I'm putting all this permenant fixture gear in there now, vent pipes cool tube etc..and before i screwed it all in place I just wanted to check I wasn't fooling myself.

I appreciate it guys.

yeah it makes sense after seeing that diagram...because most light would be emitted from the sides of the globe and therefore would cover the length of the rectangle better. One end of the globe has the socket which will block light and the other end only has a small surface area to emit light from compared to the side of the bulb angle.
