Thai police have arrested a 51-year-old Australian after he was hospitalised for a severe stomach-ache caused by 65 condoms packed with hash lodged in his lower intestine.

 

Surat Thani hospital authorities alerted police to the unusual nature of John Paul Jones' ailment on Friday after an X-ray revealed suspicious "sausage-like" objects jammed in his stomach, the Bangkok Post said.

 

"Before the operation, Mr Jones looked nervous and asked whether police would be notified," said Surat Thani Hospital doctor Worapob Sutiwatanaruput.

 

An operation revealed that the objects were condoms packed with 800 grams of hashish, three of which had burst.

 

 

 

 

Provincial authorities speculated that Jones had swallowed the goods to get them past port inspectors at the pier to Phangan Island, notorious for its "full moon" parties, drug-fuelled all-night revels that attract hundreds of foreign tourists each month.

 

Phangan Island, about 400km south of Bangkok, is part of Surat Thani province.

 

After five days, Jones had apparently failed to pass the valuable cargo, worth an estimated one million baht ($A34,000 dollars) on the local market, leading to his hospitalisation and arrest.

 

Police said Jones, who was still listed in critical condition over the weekend, faces drug trafficking charges.

Media is doing standard beatup on this "he is in crtical condition in intensive care and IF he survives he is likely to be charged" sort of thing as though the hash caused his condition, when in actual fact the poor bastard has been split open from sternum to crotch by the Thai doctors (pictures shown on abc news) to remove the condoms of hash (which looked like afghani black of old I must say). no wonder the poor bugger is in intensive care.

 

now lets have a look at some maths 60 condoms = 800 grams hash so each condom weighed about 13.3 grams he had three burst so that makes 40 grams in his system of which he may have metabolised maybe 50% he had also been throwing up so maybe even less.

 

Yes the boy would be shit faced, probably for days and spinning out something fierce most likely, but in critical condition from the resin, I think not....

If I were him I would have brought laxatives and got into a hotel room and taken my chances trying to dump (literal) it as quick as possible - now he's going to spend years in prison because he panicked. I'd asy that much hash in your system could make you feel very ill. It wouldn't be nice.

Burst drug-filled condom kills Queenslander

An Australian who tried to smuggle 60 condoms stuffed with hashish inside his stomach has died in a Thai hospital.

 

John Paul Jones, 50, was rushed to hospital on April 11 in the southern Thai town of Surat Thani, with doctors finding 60 condoms stuffed with hashish in his intestine.

 

Three of the condoms had burst.

 

A total of 800 grams of hashish was recovered from Jones.

 

Jones, from Queensland, remained in hospital after the condoms were discovered.

 

He was charged by Thai police with possession of narcotics, which carries a maximum jail term of five years.

 

But tonight the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed the Queenslander died on Saturday.

 

"A 50-year-old man who was hospitalised in Surat Thani in Thailand on the 11th of April ... he died on the 19th of April," a DFAT spokesman said, without naming Jones for privacy reasons.

 

"His family has been advised of his death and, in co-ordination with the Australian embassy in Bangkok, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra is continuing to provide consular assistance to his family."

 

The spokesman would not say how Jones had died, but the ABC has reported he died of septicaemia and liver failure.

 

No decision had been made on the return of Jones' body to Australia, with the DFAT spokesman saying it was "a matter for his family to decide".

 

"We will provide assistance depending on what they decide," he said.
