The sex of seeds

Recommended Posts

This is probably a dumb question but I shall ask anyway in the hope someone who is knowledgeable can answer and thanks in advance to the person who does that for me. I currently am underway with 7 delightful looking outdoor stinkers. The seeds I have used are from a mixed bag I have collected over some time so hopefully I get a few nice females and the smoke is of good quality as all are doing well and looking fantastic. What I wish to know is if I decide to keep a male and separate it from the females and let it mature will the seeds I get from it be all male, hermaphrodite, or both female and male. Thanks to anybody who can help with this answer as I have always wondered what seed sex a male plant would produce. Edited by fatchrome

Forgive me like I said probably a dumb question and it was upon further investigation. Yes the male produces pollen sacks which will make the females produce seed if pollinated So if that happens will the seeds from the pollinated female be different sexes? Maybe you can answer that for me. Cheers.

Yup, no such thing as a dumb question if you don't know the answer. ;)

It depends to a degree on the genetics involved specifically, but with an open pollinated hybrid line you could expect both male and female seeds to be produced. That said, it could well be that the plants you use for breeding will have hermaphroditic genetics (as they're bagseed) and in which case you could end up with hermie seed.

Far better to clone, keep a motherplant and then take cuttings from that than for the avg home gardener to do their own breeding, but it's fun, I'll give ya that.

Yep yep. My ol man always said, There is no such thing as stupid questions, only stupid answers...

Sorry, don't have much to add, as these guys have pretty much summed it all up. That and I'm still pretty much a neophyte in this field myself too. ;)

But I have to laugh at this...

Hmmm , well i suggest you take an OzStoners Triple Certificate Botany Course .. only $14.95 for a limited time only.

a pure male = strictly male flowers on the plant

pure female = strictly female flowers pon de plant

seen

if you cross a pure male with a pure female than you can work on a 50%fm & 50%m ratio

ok

if you cross a female flower with a male flowers form the same plant = that is inbreeding

seen

inbreeding increases negitive trates like hermaphrodites

right

out breeding or cross breeding porduces hybreds

true

cross breeding increases positive trates like thc content

seen

cross breeding = a cross between 2 different stable strains

eg like indica female kush x sativa male smartra trippin grass

this will produce the hybred mullum madness

hybred = enhanced positive trates of both parents

hybreds are not a stable strain and can not be reproduced from seed

they will revert back to either parrent in the next generation

dat is the easy part

ok

now it starts to get tricky

line breeding

yes i

line breeding is the grey area between inbreeding and cross breeding

eg

take the pollen from a male flower of a mostly female plant (a female that has only a few male flowers on her) and put it on another female flower from an different plant different variety or strain

no one can tell you exactley where that grey line is

but you will konw as soon as you step over it by the enhancement of all the negitive trates from both parents in the next generation

and then it get even more tricky

check the bible-->marijuanna botany by robert cornnell clarke

for the rest of the story

hope dis helps answer some a yah questions
