Cannabis should be reclassified, Brown says

Gordon Brown today gave his backing for cannabis to be reclassified as a more serious drug later this month in a move that will reverse its downgrading by his predecessor.

At his monthly press conference, the Prime Minister revealed his strong support for reclassifying cannabis as a "class B" rather than "class C" drug.

Cannabis was controversially downgraded by Tony Blair in a move which is thought to have encouraged greater use among the young

After becoming Prime Minister last June, Mr Brown ordered a formal review into the classification of cannabis which is due to report later this month.

Today's comments from the Prime Minister suggest he will push ahead with reclassification regardless of what the review concludes.

He said: "I believe that if we are sending out a signal particularly to teenagers, and particularly those at the most vulnerable age, young teenagers, that we in any way find cannabis acceptable, given all that we now know about the changes in the way cannabis is being sold in this country, that is not the right thing to do.

"My personal view has been pretty well known for some time.

"Given the changing nature of the stock of cannabis that is coming into the country and greater damage that that appears to be doing to people who use it, there is a stronger case for sending out a signal that cannabis is not only illegal but it is unacceptable."

Class C drugs include steroids and some prescription anti-depressants.

Possession of them can lead to a two-year prison sentence, but in practice, charges are rarely brought against people found with small quantities of such drugs.

Class B includes more dangerous drugs such as amphetamines.

People found in possession of Class B drugs can face a five-year jail term and an unlimited fine.

I would say he's doing it to win votes and that's why he is ignoring the advice of his own advisory committee. There's been a hell of a lot of bad mj press lately in the UK (schiz, madness and mayhem, lock up your children, killer weed and skunk is among us etc). Yep, the seed bank thing will be interesting - they just locked up 2 hydro equipment sellers. I definitely wouldn't want to be anywhere near the seed game or the hydro industry in the UK right now. I noticed Planet Skunk has dropped their forum from the seed bank and moved it to another domain name.

Yep, the transform mob are a pretty optimistic lot - they seem to think that rational thought, the great human injustice of the drug war, and the evidenced based 'facts' have a bearing on politics. :) I spoke to one of them a couple of years back and his attitude was "of course we'll win - this thing is so wrong we've got to win" :). That's funny shit but I liked his optimism.

Keep watching this space - more to come for sure.

most of the shit stirring in the press over here is from the daily mail and other murdoch rags. they misquote the experts and give time to rabid parents of dead teens who look to blame cannabis for their own bad parenting.

brown is in political trouble at the moment so anything could happen but the government (ACMD) report comes out on monday so we'll see.

on the" weed makes you mad" front, the latest report on cannabis and psychosis comes from Keele Uni in Staffordshire and contradicts all the previous dodgy ones. still, reality and truth have nothing to do with this fight and never have had. it's all about politics and some other bastards career.

Monday's the day, wish us luck.

ps. no probs with seed sales over here and those hydro guys will not be punished.

Hi Tony - thanks for the feed from the source.

The Independent seems to have been one of the most boisterous reefer madness rags - is that Murdoch owned??? I thought it was owned by some filthy rich Scotsman.

Those hydro guys are already in prison - that was what was in the news. They got some pretty heavy slaps too. Are we talking about Paul fenwick who ran a store in Derby??? Bit confused and thanks for the info.
