a quick question,,,,,, any tips for nutes, and do they clearly tell u how much to use,,, there are so many, the shop i went to had a range,,,like canna, ozcanna, budlink, headon, dutchfest, kabloom, and the list goes on, but when i was asking the fella he kinda said ,well there all good, and will proberly all do what u want them to do, but the did vary in price, and some were "a + b" nutes,,,, i dont really need professionaly results,, just nice and healthy, potent plant, with nice buddlys,, plus an easy one to use would be nice, i dont need things getting too fiddly or confusing,,,,, also i will be hand watering the plant, and is it cool if when u hand water the nutes, can the nutes touch leaves or will it burn them,????????? any advice very much appreciated,,,,,,also advice on when to start using them would be appreciated,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,thanks,,,,,,,,,overeanout

Hi denske

It can be really confusing when you first start growing hydroponically , but in reality its very easy.

Tell us a little about your setup - ie. are you growing in clay balls, Rockwool or soil, is it a flood and drain system or drip feeding?

You will need to spend a little money just to get basics, if you dont your yeild will be greatly reduced. But more on that soon!

any tips for nutes

Get good quality nutrients, mix them to the manufacturers directions.

there are so many, the shop i went to had a range,,,like canna, ozcanna, budlink, headon, dutchfest, kabloom, and the list goes on, but when i was asking the fella he kinda said ,well there all good, and will proberly all do what u want them to do, but the did vary in price, and some were "a + b" nutes,,,,

Ask him which brand are most popular with the serious growers (I use Growrite liquid A+B for veg and Budrite liquid A+B for flowering), if he doesn't know or you still can't decide then go for the Canna brand, you can't go wrong with them.

i dont really need professionaly results,, just nice and healthy, potent plant, with nice buddlys,, plus an easy one to use would be nice, i dont need things getting too fiddly or confusing,,,,,

The higher the yield and the better quality you get from using quality nutrients makes it worth a few dollars more.

How old are your plants?

Hand watering in a hydroponic setup isnt the way to go, if you need to go away for a day or two, your plants will suffer. You'd be better off using one of the other methods eg. DWC, Drip, NFT or aeroponics.

It will cost a few $$ to get set up but in the long run life will be easier.

As far as getting nutrients on the leaves, most manufacturers recommend 1/3 to 1/2 half strength foliar spray. lol

g'day; i been hand feeding hydroponically for 9 years nearly, general purpose nutrients work great.

i use Canna nutes now, best available imo. mix at ratio of 100ml nutrient to 25ltr water.

having a indoor grow setup means not going away for more than 2 days in succession.

cheers guys,,,,,,my little fellas, are maybe 2weeks old,,1/2 been under the 400 for nearly a week,, the rest were under"mystrey spottie for nearly2.5 weeks,,,,,and that spotty is working,,, except they are a little spindily than the others, but the leaves seem nice an green an getting big,,, i also have a small fan in there, not extrating just blowing across them,,,i might setup a watering system later on, maybe for next grow,,, but before i bought this light,,, i was working with some , dripper ideas,,, with a 25litre drum like toms, that ran with gravity to the plants and dripped through the pots,, but i didnt have a pump to get it back up, or to a resovuior,, but the dripper bit was working fine with gravity,"i was actually surprised how far the water ran with the gravity" i know from work, with that sorta shit, if u run small lines"narrow diameter line" than u can get quite a bit of pressure and it would work several meters away, from the drum, even having the line run along the florr then up to the pots,,, i really think ill hand water+feed, just to force meself to regulary check them, and moniter them,,, this is my 1st indoor grow,, so im fasinated by it all,,,, maybe im a mossie an i like the light,,lol,,,,, so im best of going with a decent brand nutes,,,,alrrrightyy,,, bugger it, i hear so much about canna,,, but i was thinking maybe that ozcanna,,, nice price , an the dude was saying its kinda the same, just made here an cheaper, i also had a mate who used "headon" and reckons its good,,,,, ive only ever used thrive, and its always made my plants power,, it has a surprisingly high level of nitrogen,,, but since typing here, i cant remember what else it has or is missing,,,, so ill buy some "mj specific stuff",,,,,,any tips on when i should feed em,,,, i was thinking a little bit longer, than slowly start feeding them, half mixes of nutes at first,,maybe another week or so?????,,,,,also, what about using those additives?, yeh or nay,,,, and any tips on which is a gooer, and when should u use them?,,,,also,,,, tips on mounting lights in cupboard greatly appreciated, i currently got this bad boy strung up with rope, but im fast looking at a another way, the reflector is kinda hot, and could melt through the rope, causing problems i dont need to think about, also how high do u have them,, i done the put ya hand under it trick,,, and i have some plants a different heights within the cupboard to try an figure it out,,,, ok enough questions,,,,,,,,,thanks for all help, ill have ta get some pics but i dont have a digicam,, cheerrrss,,, overanout

You can just see the type of chain that I use to hang my lights with in this picture of a previous grow, I use cup hooks above and adjust the height by threading the chain links onto it.

Hey Denske,

Canna veg a/b and canna flore a/b are very good nutes for ease of use, and guarantee results. (About $20 for a litre bottle)

They will automatically buffer the tap water PH down to a accepable level for your girls

But for a small cost check below:-

50 litre tank $15 clints

timer $10 bunnings/hardware house

airpump/stone $15 local markets

13mm hose 2m $2 hardware house

5 buckets 15litre $0.75 each hardware house

dripper fittings $5

water heater $40

pump $40

total $130.00

Get yourself a automatic watering system, even hand feeding you still have to buy a water heater and air pump, and the cost is just a few dollars more.

It would be real pain in the arse having to wait around to feed the girls every few hours by hand.

If you want more control on your nutrients go for a General Hydroponics three part nutrient, costs a little more but you get what you pay for.

As far as additives go, if you only could chose one flore additive make it Kabloom by general hydro - This stuff is bullshit for putting weight and size onto the flores. Its $60 for a container, and it will last forever justabout.

Another big problem for cuboard growers in heat builup - ---> cheap fix

Drill some holes in the bottom of the cuboard so air can draw in, on top of the buy a small computer fan ($20.00) from any computer shop and install. The air in the room will heat up after a while, but you are lucky its coming into winter soon so you should be ok. Dont use those cheap bathroom fans as they will catch fire after a while.

A few tips:--

Change your water every 7 days so you dont have ph and ec problems.

Try and keep inside cubaord temps below 27 degress max.(it is hard)

Only put the amount of nutrient it says on the back of the bottle, over strong nutrient will kill the girls.

Dont use cheap nutrient - you WILL be sorry

In cuboard situation try and tie back every branch to maximise light and get greater yeild.

Another good trick in a cuboard is suppercropping - its really very easy - when the girls are eight inches high, grap the tip of the plant and tie onto the side of the bucket, when it grows some more, try and tie a lose granny knot into the bottom of the plant. This will allow all side branching to get the same amount of light as the main cola. Very effective way for controling height and maximising yeilds in small spaces.
