Government set to block 'undesireable' internet site

Recommended Posts

Yep Fraz, if the govt blocked OSA, you could still get to it using Tor. Tor definitely slows things down a bit, adds several hops into the network path, but it absolutely will circumvent any IP or domain name ban set up at your ISP. I believe you can even set it to encrypt traffic so an eavesdropper would have to have your decryption key to see wot you're seeing. A snooper might see your IP connected to a proxy or a Tor node but they'd not know what you're accessing.

All we're doing with Tor and other proxy arrangements is adding a relay station or three in the path, nothing fancy. Big Bother might be able to ban certain websites but there's no way in hell he can ban all the proxies and Tor nodes. Even the 'Great Firewall of China' doesn't keep Chinese ppl from going anywhere they want.

About a squillion Aussie tech-heads have been laughing loudly about this one for the last week or so, many have sent letters to Sen Conroy indicating he's just tripped over the same folly that has knocked down many well-meaning pols before him, who did equally little research into actually how to effect such bans. Some idiot pols think 'we're the government, we can do anything we want!' Never you mind that what's proposed is technically impossible. Conroy otta be seeing the light of day any old time now.

Shall we revisit this topic in about 6 months? My money says that this issue will have died VERY quietly when Conroy finds out he can't actually accomplish what he proposed.
