Cross Pollinating

Recommended Posts

breeding for the home grower is dead easy. just cross your best male with your best female.

its not likely you'll get a result much better than that no matter what you do when your main goal is to grow some top shelf smoke.

regarding the post about female pollen, its possible the person was talking about the banana pollen sacks that some of the longer flowering strains can sometimes throw out in the latter stages of flowering

Hi, I've had a little experience with both of these, both growing and pollen slingin'.

An earlier post asked if it was Mr Nice..if so I agree in this case an exceptionally resionous WW male would be suitable. Any other time I'd always use the NYCD as the papa. Attempting to find the stinkiest diesel you can, you should be able to tell in veg with NYCD. Is it Soma's 'NYCD'?

btw. Do not pollinate too early. I recently found out the hard way. Due to circumstances on last seed run I had to pollinate early.

Beautiful big buds but some of the calyx's had fully matured and begun to decompose with 2-3 weeks till harvest

just my 2 cents.

Anyone who can breed reliably and over multiple generations and actually improve on the genetics in this wonderful plant has a great skill and no small amount of balls. Breeding two plants together to produce some seed is easy.

Breeding properly and with an actual aim in mind, and then actually achieving said aim, isn't.

btw, very nice buds there RunTHC. ;)

If you really want to give it a go, (and hey, if you do it once it's likely to have hybrid vigor and at least be as good as the previous generations) then I would recommend checking out a few of the threads on here about seed production, the search function should pop up a few threads and suggestions.

I've pollinated single colas before, using a breathable bag method, and it worked reasonably well, but the best results from breeding will always be had from selecting the "best" (whatever trait you're aiming for, potency, flavour, shape or growth habit etc...) female out of a large amount of plants and then doing the same for a large selection of males. If possible, doing the reverse cross is a good idea, as some genes and traits are distinctly sex linked and can only be expressed or passed on by one sex or another in a strain... so for example, you'd cross a male nycd and a female ww, and then the reverse cross would be a female nycd and a male ww.

Some growers with more experience with these particular varieties, like runtHC, will be invaluable to you, as they've got genetic information from crossing and recording, crossing and recording, ad infinitum. A good stud book, with lots of information recorded and meticulously kept, will be another invaluable tool for yourself in the future. If you want to breed well, and stabilise a trait or traits in a line of seed over more than one generation, you'll need to keep good records of what you've been breeding with. Memory is fallible, particularly stoner memory.

Please let us know how the cross goes and what happens with the resulting seed. ;) We're always keen to encourage new breeding, as when you consider it, breeding is a pretty hard thing to do long term (which if you're aiming to improve the genetics of cannabis you'll want to do) and with a black market in existence practically everywhere, it's being done mostly by gifted amateurs. There may be professional seed banks and even breeders out there who do nothing but make a living out of breeding great weed, but they're always being hunted, and we're lucky to have em.

do a google for .. Marijuana Botany.. by R C Clark... this is the best book ever written on MJ hands down..just happens to deal with breeding too.. a very good read... and in my opinion there is NO better book on the subject...

it can get very complicated .. if you let it... the easiest way to start is to breed 2 pure strains together... this way youll end up with less Phenos to choose from.. and a very basic cross... you should end up with 3 phenos from this cross.. the mum.. the dad.. and the cross... very simple... breeding 2 pure strains results in a F1 hybrid... from there you can choose the cross.. stabilize it.. and start again... theres no need to complicate things... at first....

heres a pic of the White Heaven ive crossed.. this resulted in an F1 hybrid.. this cross should stabilize the strain.. further testing is needed... but im pretty confident that it should be stabilized..

What I would do if I was just staring out. Buy quality genetics/something YOU like. Grow out every seed (eg 10)

Pollinate the the best 3 females with the best 2 males.

This will provide you with seeds for a lifetime. By initialy opening up the line you give yourself genetics to work with for a lifetime.

Grow her till you know her! Hopefully when you reach F20 you may have a fairly stable line
