Pot Growing

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm fairly new to the growing game (3rd crop on its way), but from what I've seen, the plants have very large root systems for the size of the plant.

One of my first plants was in a pot about 15cm wide, by 20cm deep and the plant only grew about 60cm tall. Whether it was the pot size, or some other reason, I'm not sure. I transplanted it to a larger pot, but it didn't gain much height after that. When I transplanted it, I did notice how many roots there were for such a small plant.

Pinching the top off the plant is supposed to stop it from getting taller, but you may still get the lower 4 stems growing taller, depending on the maturity of the plant.

I now grow my plants in pots about 60cm wide by 60cm deep, and they get about 6 ft tall. They're always a Sativa variety, which are known for being leggier than Indicas.

Hope this helps.

Puredead, is the plant from seed, or a clone? I have found that clones have smaller root systems in soil than a plant grown from seed.

The roots usually correspond to the plant, and I've had some large mothers demand larger quarters by looking ill.

But if you're growing a plant from seed and plan to flower then you should be fine with a 3-5 Gal pot.

Here's a pic I just posted elsewhere of 2 clones in a lined milk crate in soil. These seem to be the size you're after.

Hope that helps.

seed grown plants need a larger root system because they have a major tap root while clones usually have a few that spread out :D

as for the pot size needed to get a 1.5m tall plant, i recommend getting atleast a 50L pot and using a hydronponic medium as that will get the best results. if you are growing outdoors, use coco mixed with a bit of perlite for drainage and with a 50L pot you'll get a monster :) but on the other hand you could technically grow a 1.5m tall plant in a 20L pot without too many issues, the main thing would be the plant getting rootbound which leads to the lower leaves dying off and a very decreased yield :D

That's true. But a 50ltr pot while great for a soilless medium would be so heavy if filled with soil that you would need a forklift to move it. So keep that in mind.

(well maybe not a forklift... but I've tried moving big pots full of soil, not fun)
