There are more of us than them. But for the most part we do nothing, except complain. We are at a crossroads of history. The issues are fundamental and deep. I am awaiting a catalyst. Yet even then the barely thinking default-position of old habits and ingrained cynical truths will probably condemn us to another Dark Ages. And societies will be very stable, repressive, reactionary and conformist for millennia.

 

The lies are coming apart at the seams. The actors and actresses are starting to falter with more open disdain. The myths upon which we've slavishly built our awkward lives are mostly tawdry lies. Lies that survive in the mental de-compression chambers of our minds; lies inculcated at the nipple, by the tug of heartstrings and the system. The callous swansong to a demented aeon, sung by State, church and intellectual prostitutes; glimpsed by prophets, feared by economists, foretold by mystics and attested to by every cone smoker.

 

I have found the enemy!

It isn't any of the usual suspects.

The 1970s was the most tasteless decade of the proceeding century. The stark truthfulness of this observation can be seen in what passed for fashion. The styles invite a cringe. Plastic was still primitive but ubiquitous, as was the open-necked shirt and cigarettes.

 

Nonetheless, there was some pretty good shit going down – courtesy of Vietnam. Tobacco was not as highly taxed, there was lots of incense, Australian reds were inexpensive (indeed the shelves were awash with cheap claret styled wines), some men sported boar's tusk necklaces - ten years in an open necked shirt and flared trousers!

 

Mood rings were another thing. Cheap, mass-produced nasties with a ring size you could adjust to your finger. Depending on skin temperature, the different colours in the chemically impregnated cloth embedded beneath plastic told you and others-in-the-know, your mood. And the women who purchased these shabby trinkets probably needed a shamefacedly awful thing like that to know how they felt!

 

No one knows for sure how many millions the Mafia made out of “Deep Throat” and America's very own first Porn Star Queen: Linda Lovelace. Men wore Old Spice or Brut33. Pornographic hedonism became the aesthetic in all matters – especially politics. Ali could still deliver simple, sound-byte lines.

 

Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry strode the alienated decade with Bowie and Major Tom. Australian music found its own feet whilst I discovered John Cooper-Clarke, the Bard of Salford. Optimistic charlatans of easy virtue and less money hawked the back lanes of memory like advertisements in comic book end-pages still do...when I've had a smoke and am drifting.

Personally, brass bowl and stem, rubber grommet and glass carafe to make me change the water regularly. Have made my own by drilling wine carafes to suit for years, I am about to make one for a friend in the next few days and will post a how-to with photos including how to make you own bowl and stem from brass readily available from local hardware plumbing supply joint and no "special" tools other than an electric drill and bits, for those that cannot buy one in their state of tyranny.

 

Copper fumes as does aluminium, Brass is far more stable as a metal and is designed to take high heat without exuding which is why it is used in valves in chem plants where high temps are standard.

A recent study I read showed a well designed bhong can remove ~90% of the tars and carcinogens from the smoke stream while only loosing about 5% of the cannabinoids. I will post the study in "research" threads if I can find it again

It's a fact that copper can put off gases at the temps obtained with a normal lighter so that's definitely a no no. As for brass it's safe but alters the taste of the smoke, ally is also safe as it can not release any gases at the temps obtained by a lighter but gets hot quicker than brass (it's just a urban myth that smoking through ally will give you alzheimer's) and also affects taste, even more so than brass.

Glass is your friend, it's totally inert (won't give off gases, alter taste or react with other materials) no matter what temp and is easy to keep clean.

I believe there was a study linking alzheimer's disease with aluminum, where the researchers found that there was a high % of aluminium buildup in the brain. If my memory serves me right, it did not directly link alzheimer's to aluminium, but its better to be safe then sorry. Brass is pretty safe imo, just steer away from copper (can't say ive seen a copper stem/cone unless your talking about DIY's) and aluminium.
