Singapore authorities have issued an arrest warrant for an Australian man charged with drug trafficking after he skipped bail.

The Central Narcotics Bureau says a warrant has been issued for 38-year-old Michael Karras.

The Straits Times reports Karras did not appear for a court appearance on May 9.

His lawyer, SS Dhillon, could not be immediately reached for comment.

According to a court document, Karras is charged with trafficking 437 grams of cannabis and cannabis mixture, a charge that carries at least five years' imprisonment and a minimum five strokes of the cane on conviction.

A death penalty sentence is mandatory for anyone caught trafficking more than 500 grams of cannabis.
