fans on or off?

Recommended Posts

Do my fans need to be on or off while the dark period is on?I ask this as i have a growbox in my shed that is powered by a extention cord coming from the house into the shed that is connected to a powerboard on top of my growbox that has two fans and a ballast with 250watt light connected to it.I have a timer pluged into the power point in the house then the extention cord pluged into that.So obviously when the timer goes off so do the fans.I think that makes sence, sry have had a fair few bourbons.I cant have anymore than one extention cord going to the shed as this would look very suss.I have my light and fans on for 14on10off.My seeds have been in the soil for 2 days.

At this point it dosent matter all that much if the fans are running all the time or not, but once they start to get bigger and it starts to get hotter u mite need to have them running a lot more.

One other thing i would do is extend the light period from 14 hours on to at least 16 hours once the seeds have started to grow.

Another thing you can do is instead of having the timer in the house put the timer into the power board and plug the ballast into that, then you just plug the 2 fans in with out the timer and they will run all the time and only the light will come on and off with the times u set.

You can then get another timer plug it into the power board to plug the fans into and set that as well for the fans to come on and off at what ever times u wish.

But at this point it isent a big thing to stress about...

:D

If you can do as Jimbo says that is a good way .. 15mins on 15 off etc B) ..

Um , I have a similar problem , but is due to the cold temperatures , I think maybe that is what your question is about B) .. because ofc If its too hot you would leave the fans on all the time B)

Anyway .. If you can regulate the fan for temperature versus fresh air intake that is what you want .. otherwise , I set my 2-time timer to turn the fans off in the colder early morning stage (for example) ..

O.k. , Hope that helps at all , and good luck lol

P.s. to elaborate , atm I'm in flower (12/12) but the weather is still a little cool (specially thru the nite) .. so ofc I put the lights ON in the nightime period (6pm to 6am e.g.) .. they are good at 25-30 degress with lots of air flow ..

But if the lights go off at 6am then its still quite cool , so I run the fan for only half an hr after the light has gone off (CHeap timer 1/2 hr incriments) and keep it off for 2 hrs , then it turns back on , as it is starting to get warmer at around 9am ofc lol

nw , all the best.

Sounds like the solution to a couple of folks' problems are in this thread about paralleling a thermostat with a motor speed controller. With that arrangement, even when temps are low, the fan can be allowed to run at about 20% speed while lights are off and the thermostat isn't being triggered. This will prevent accumulation of humidity over 'night' and will also keep scents running through a carbon filter (should you have one) instead of leaking out all over the place.

Thanks Al, that's just what I was looking for!

coolio Jimbo.

The only downside to the tstat/MSC arrangement happens to be the upside as well. Since air is always being drawn through the room, although at lower volumes during lights off, room temps may run too low during the dark period. If you run your flowering room lights overnight and allow the dark period during the day when ambient temps are higher, this problem isn't so bad.

However, if dark period room temps run below 16C, as may happen during this cool time of year, it may be wiser to run a dehumidifier in the room during lights off than to allow the fan motor to be run at low speed. A dehumidifier will make enough heat to trigger the exhaust blower a few times during lights off, while keeping RH down to 50% or so.
