All Seeds Are Female

Recommended Posts

A buddy of mine says he can make a female plant from any seed. The secret? Temperature! He's told me that there are many sites on the web where you can confirm this however I've not found them. I'm not growing at the moment so I can't confirm this but here's what he says: The gender of a plant is determined by temperature of the soil when the seed germinates, the cooler the soil the better chance of a female. He puts his pot of soil and fert in the refrigerator for three days after which he places the seed in the soil and covers the pot with plastic wrap. He places the pot in a cool place where it gets some sun each day until the plant breaches the soil level. After that he takes the plastic wrap off and it's life as usual. He says he's been growing this way the past year with 100% girls!! Now everyone says that the gender of the plant is in the genetics and I completely agree, HOWEVER, I've had plants go from female to male flowers (hermaphrodite) because of a lighting mistake. This indicates that the genetics of a plant can go either male OR female. So riddle me this, if the temperature of the soil actually does decide the gender of the plant then the seed MUST have the genetics to produce both males AND females!! Which is completely understandable as some fish actually go from females to males if there isn't enough males to reproduce! Like I said, I'm not growing right now and therefore have no evidence to suggest this theory but my buddy is convinced, and if indeed he's had 100% girls in the last year (growing 24 plants each 3 months) then I'm convinced this is the case. Any of you growing out there might want to give this theory a go!!! I will be giving this idea a go in another 6 months or so when I can start growing crops again but I would LOVE to hear any results from anyone that uses this method! ;)

Peace out and happy smoking!

The sex of the plant is determined by genetics when the seed is formed, your buddy needs to do a bit of research.

If this is true how is it that a plant can go from producing female flowers to producing male ones? It seems obvious to me that any seed is capable of being either. I've seen this numerous times as I'm sure many others here have as well. The fact that my buddy has seeded over 50 plants and every one of them was female leads me to believe he's on to something. His 'research' is experience. And I don't expect anyone to take my word for it, give it a shot and see if it doesn't work for you. I've heard some pretty outlandish ways of determining a female seed from a male seed so this sure wouldn't be any more ridiculous.

But you're the expert. (apparently)

Mate no-one here claims to be an expert ... but collectively these peeps here have decades of growing experience from which to draw on, and you shouldnt admonish Tom cause he IS verging on Proffessor status ...

anyways having said that you really need a good grasp of cannabis genetics and breeding to understand the many variables involed in making seeds as there are many methods and tricks ... e.g. if you can get a female plant to produce some male pollen and it fertilizes its self you may end up with all those seeds growing out as female plants , this is an oversimplified example and im no expert either, just trying to give you a rough idea ... and im not discounting that your mate has come upon a new development ... its a lot of trial and error with canna and we learn as we go ...

if this was the case... and im am not going to say yes or no.. just yet.. but... if this was the case then every time you do a seeding and have all the seedlings in the same area.. ie indoors under the same light in the same wardrobe.. then, going by this theory.. all seeds will be male or female... but this just isnt the case.. as i always seem to get a mixture of males, females and hermies...

George Cervantes has said in a high times column.. that temperatures can determine either more males or more females... again i cant see how... although.. he is the "guru"

as for plants being female and showing signs of hermie, yellow banana leaves... this is a common trait for about 99.9% of Mj strains... and there are many things that can cause it.. the seeds from a plant that does this will generally spit female seeds... wont be 100% female.. but around 60-80% will be.. im guessing your mate has got his seeds from a plant thats done this.. so the female-male ratio is already high to begin with..

now couple with what your mate is doing.. or discovered.. and what George Cervantes has said.. the cold soil might be.. changing the plants that will take longer to sex.. and could possibly be hermie to female..

I am not exactly sure that this is the case.. as I havent really done any experiments to do with soil temps and seedlings...

I personally think its wrong.. and your mate has just got a good batch of seed... it goes against 100 years of research.. which tells us the seed... will be male, female or hermie from the time of pollination... and has nothing to do with how you germinate them...

Never seen it Chato ,

cause it only takes one male to make a million or so seeds .... but it takes many females to make that amount of seeds ... male only has pollen but female can carry both pollen and ovaries ... :nono:

woops .... i think i lost myself again ... stuff it, thats too hard chato im gunna to watch the footy and cone on ... ;) ;)

:greedy:

p.s. but itsa bloody good question
