Grafting and Multi Strain Clone's Patched on

Recommended Posts

Hey enemys and associates.. have a question

Me and an Italian mate were sitting down talking about cannabis consumption and production and he started rambling about his uncle and how he has a big orange tree stump with Grape Fruit and Lemon and Manderin cuttings all grafted onto the stump so he can have a big variety of citrus plants..

Now i was wondering is this possible with cannabis and would i be able to say have one huge tree stump and keep it for yrs on end (fertilize for fee) and say 10 bonsai mums with all sorts of strains.. and just graft on clones for flower (control the 12/12)..

Is this possible and please shoot out any flaws and problems that may arise.. i expect only the wiser and more informed to understand or be aware what grafting is..

It'd be quite feesable, but it would pay to have the base plant in the vegetative state, and i'd guess the strike rate would be better if the graft was done on fresh young growth where you can get the base plant to bleed. Grafting onto old wood, would be possible, but there's a fair chance they won't take as well as the new growth areas.

Definitely something i'm interested in having a crack at, at a later date as i've been mullin' over this idea for some time. I used to do a bit of grafting of fruit trees some years back, and it sure is a buzz when ya get a good strike rate.

There's a couple of different ways to go about it, just a matter of working out the best method for the age/state of the base plant.

you can graft but apparently theres not much pint, the other one is you can graft pot to hops plant and other way around, again from what i hear there is not much point but it can be done.

any how best of luck, if you do manage can we see a guide and some pics as this would be quite interesting.

on another note, when you break a branch off and tape it back on and the outer layer heals that is basically a graft, so i have grafted broken branches back on before but only during veg.

the only situation I can think of where grafting would be worthwhile is if you wanted to preserve clones of a number of strains and keep your plant numbers down at the same time. ie it might be possible to have one big mother plant with 5 or 6 different strains growing off it. With the trend for harsher indoor laws it may become a big issue to keep your total plant numbers below 5 in some states. :scratchin:

It's perfectly possible to have a "fruit salad plant" so to speak, with multiple scions grafted and growing from one rootstock.

Doesn't make it easy.

You need a vigourous rootstock to work from, perhaps a sativa landrace or F1 hybrid with a reputation for large root systems would be most appropriate. You have to keep all the scions growing at similar rates and at similar heights too, as if one branch becomes dominant it will soon outgrow and outcompete the others for a share of the nutrient and water the rootstock supplies.

I'd love to see it, but it's not really a practical option IMO. Much, much more hassle than keeping a separate mother for 5 plants than maintaining 5 scions on one rootstock. And there's the added problem of if you lose the plant, to disease or anything else, you've lost the lot....

I'm with Luke. It's too easy to keep multiple mother plants than try to do grafts.

A citrus tree takes years to grow; it's sensible to add scions to existing or hardy rootstock when there's a lot of time in it.

A new cannabis mother plant can be had in 7-10 days from taking a cutting from the old mother plant. Soon as it sets root, veg it & call it a mum. :)
