When to pick my lovely Buds

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the confirmation Bill.

Just checked me water and its sitting on 140 ppm.

Have now emptied and put in new fresh water and there is a zero reading on my truncheon.

Top leaves are looking very secondhand however lower leaves are still very fresh looking.

Cheers

no of course not bman.. its just the plant is doing a totally different thing during the day than at night time... both parts of the cycle are just as important as the each other.. you need to understand how the plant works.. trying to put this in a way I can understand it... lol .... the leaves feed from the roots... the flowers feed from the leaves... you have mobile nutrients and immobile nutrients... immobile nutrients are held through out the plant structure in the leaves and stalks... the mobile nutrients are stored with in the root system.. and are only active during the light cycle.. these nutrients help the plant to absorb the energy from the sun, i guess they go through some transformation which changes the sugars and starches to nutrients held with in the leaves .. some how.. lol .... then at night.. when the buds are feeding from the leaves.. they can use these nutrients created during the day from the starches and sugars...

or something like that...

SS during the "day" the plant photosynthesises, which is the process of changing nutrients from the soil (or whatever medium) INTO starches/sugars for the plant to "eat" that's why the plant takes in carbon dioxide and releases oxygen.. the carbon molecule is part of the starch.. during the "night" the plant will respirate the same as animals.. it "eats" carbon (starches) by combining with oxygen to produce energy for growth.

Plants do still respirate during the "day" but on balance they photosynthesise more than they respirate (ie make more than they eat) unless something is wrong.

The trouble with starch (carbon) from a smokers point of view is that it burns dirty (hydro-carbons)... think of the smoke from burning oil or rubber which are both purified forms of carbon.. by giving an extended period of dark before harvest, you allow the plant to respirate (eat) all the carbon that it has made and stored in the leaves (or at least as much as possible) and power that last little bit of flower growth.

Which is also the theory behind the "flush" before harvest.. by starving the plant of essential nutrients the idea is that the chemicals used in photosynthesis become short in supply (leaves yellow = no clorophyll = no photosynthesis) meaning that the amount of carbon (sugar) in the plant is decreased, however as the carbon is also used for powering the growth of flowers, if you start a flush too early you can rob yourself of yield.

It will have no effect on potency IMO and is quite probably a waste of time if you eat or vape your cannabis.. but there are very few smokers who would not notice the difference if given a side by side test.

Also .. during "day" the plants will transpire much more water due to heat (evaporate through the leaves/flowers), which is why you will notice the trichomes are standing tall and swollen first thing in the "morning" and looking a bit wilted by the end of the "day" the same way the leaves do... the less water the plant has in it's tissues at harvest the quicker it will dry (in theory).. whether that's a good thing or bad thing is for you to decide.

To answer the original question.. I would give them a good dark period of 24 - 48 hours before harvest, and then turn some lights on and harvest, don't fumble around in the dark

Thanks for that DUD

Would it be of any benifit ifI was to go through her say 48 hrs before pick time and trim off all the large fan leaves???

Less stored starch. lol

I still dont have a reading on my soloutin so it must be under 140ppm somewere lol

But thats good i think its what i want

Do you really think that an extended night period before harvest would be benificial? lol

The extended dark period will reduce the amount of starch in the plant...making the smoke smoother, it wont' make any difference to the potency.. it's really only of any benefit if you are a smoker as opposed to an eater or vaper, the difference between a long dark or not is small and possibly subjective, not as large a difference as the flush/no flush.

I haven't personally tried trimming off the fan leaves before the dark, in theory that would help the process as some starch is stored in fan leaves until used.

If you're thinking of trimming fan leaves instead of an extended dark then no that wont work, because any green part of the plant contains clorophyll and can therefore photosynthesise (make starch) to some extent, just not as efficiently as fan leaves, only during dark time does the plant use carbon (starch) without producing more.
