Distorted, 'bubbly' leaves...

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, been reading these forums for a little while now and have found it to be a tremendous wealth of information, but now I need some help on a possible problem that I havn't found any information relating to.

Ok so some information on my 1st grow setup that im trying to do right the first time.

400w hps

large 2mx60cmx2.2m wardrobe with 40cm fan, no ventilation as such yet and quite frankly im hoping not to have to cut it up unless its nessesary as this fan certainly moves the air around.

using 100% coco

'nitrosol' nutrients (can someone tell me if i should bother buying something better? it has 12.2% nitrogen, 2.9% phos, 8.5% potassium and 2.1% calcium and im not sure if its gonna get the results I want). I dont have a ppm meter so im trying to go by what the directions say, if not less to not overnute them. usually putting ~30ml into 10L.

I try to vary the ph from 5.8 to 6.3.

2 plants are 4 weeks, the others are ~2-3wks

Ok well in my grow I have culled down to 6, and will cull to hopefully 2 or 3 fems when the time comes. My biggest and most compact plant is healthy, apart from new growth distorting and being slightly 'bubbly'. My 2nd biggest is perfect, no distorting and no bubbling. One of my smaller ones has the worst case of this 'bubbling', with no distortion, which is the one with the closeup pic of it. The others are all fine apart from a slight case of ph burn on lower leaves before I got a damn digital meter lol but have grown strong since.

The first pic is a closeup of the worst leaf.

The second is sideview of my biggest and densest which is distorting and had slight case of bubbling

The third is top view of the biggest.

The fourth is my cupboard, im starting to get concerned about bud rot etc and am looking for some suggestions on what I can do?

Thanks all hope I can be helped!

You need to, it's not optional.

Coco needs coco nutrients, they have more calcium and other trace elements.

I try to vary the ph from 5.8 to 6.3.
Try keeping it around 6.3 - 6.5, I prefer 6.3 myself.

The leaf problems should clear up with the correct nutrients and the increase in PH.

Heya Gibbo and Tom

ventilation is not optional lmao so true

I think there is something not quite right in the root zone lol

Ditch the Nitrosol and find a nutrient suited to coco.

I used to like 6.2 so it seems concensus is in the low 6's, which to me makes sense as the mechanics of what's going on in the root zone in coco seem to like to pull it back to the mid 5's which, should give it a good spread across the pH range for nutrient uptake lol

Watering is important with coco, letting it get too dry makes the EC rise rapidly which can damage the roots which then encourages Pythium but overwatering can also lead down the same path.

Low EC no more than 1.2 EC is the go with a nice drink of straight water once a week.

Benenficial bacteria and/or some Canna products are worth looking at too if only to get a better picture of whats happening

Hmm, I was sure I replied to Tom's post a couple of days ago... ohwell.

Just a bit of an update, I went out and bought the 2 part GT Coco nutes (as suggested by my local hydro guy) and since then the new leaves appear to be better on the biggest plant, but the one in the photo above with the closeup shot of the leaves im keeping an eye on, because those very same leaves have curled upwards and the stems have turned a bit purple. New growth SEEMS to be ok but there is a bit of leaf curling. Have to keep watch over it.

Other than that the others are all good with the biggest one being ALOT denser than the rest, its so thick in there that I can't even untangle the branches!.

Thanks for the tips, I also priced up a carbon filter w/fan for when I start the flowering phase and can be bothered cutting holes in the wardrobe :scratchin:

don't know how ur gonna handle w' no exhaust+inlet.

i know my plants would be looking very ill if they didn't have the air movement.

when ur plants get bigger ur gonna find u have plenty troubles without decent ventilation in & out.

imo u should sort that out asap.

good luck with ur grow man.

Hi Gibbo, as well as Rhyzotonic/Cannazyme http://www.canna-au.com/dhtml/products.php?lang=enx

beneficial bacteria (Power Active) http://www.nulifetech.com.au/products.html#additives

or H202 (not the best link but it's not bad info) http://www.blunt.co.uk/hydroponics-manual/.../use/index.html

check out this stuff mate, it's another way to get around the fungal problems associated with coco and other mediums

I think your leaf curling is caused by lack of ventilation and exessive heat. It could also be a case of overwatering as well. Overwatering can cause leaves to 'harden' and the heat will cause them to curl.

I've just had to lower the water levels in my bubbler to allow the roots to 'breathe' more due to the leaves starting to harden and burn slightly.

I hope this helps ya a bit mate. I'm not too up to date on CoCo and it's nutes, so i'm not sure if any of your problems are related to that as well.

I hope this helps ya out a bit mate...
