Clumsy gardener causes big injury...

Recommended Posts

What are the chances of a main branch repairing itself when it has just suffered a major trauma?

I hooked my sleeve on a branch that is attached to the main stem and snapped it halfway through right at the node! I gaffa taped it back together and am hoping for the best but I'll be pissed if I lose it as it has heaps of flowering sites on it... :freak: B) B)

Is there anything else I can do? :scratchin:

Did it split the length of the stem or branch, or across it? If down the length, just bring the two halves together and loosely hold it together with a zip tie or something. If i break em across, i just tend to leave em heal themselves. If the plant is healthy enough it'll repair itself within a couple of weeks. From what i learnt over the years is that the "wood" of the plant is only there for support of the plant, as long as there's some strands of the bark unbroken and the plant is healthy, it'll have no hassles in survivin'. I'm renouned for snappin' branches and 9 times outta 10, they require no attention from me.

If it snapped the way i think it has and you really need it growing vertically. I'd be looking for a length of dowel and 4 zip ties. Get the dowel as close as poss to the main stem and secure with zip ties, 2 above 'n 2 below the break. Only do em up enough to hold the dowel in place. No need to over tighten and risk strangling it.

I'd piss the tape off though, all it will do if not sealed properly, will create a nice lil' home for bacteria to breed.

Thanks IndyCar,

Here's a pic of where the snap is...not this plant but same spot.

It is about 60% through the node join - so hopefully it will heal ok. I'll piss the tape off and try some matchsticks & a ziplock.

Is there a gel or something you can buy for wounds?

if you were quick and got the snapped branch back in place, there will be alot of stunting, but it should be a-ok and continue to grow :scratchin:

in the past when i have broken a branch, i taped it back to the plant for a few days and then made a splint out of some old dry stem i had laying around. was just a matter of wrapping some string around the stems and waiting a week until i removed them B) i noticed a fair bit of stunting and recovery time, but you will have more buds come harvest with that branch on so put in the hard yards now and enjoy the fruits of your labour :freak:

There's grafting gels about that i used to use on fruit trees, but i never had to use em on MJ yet. if you're worried about air getting inside the plant, i 'd forget about it. Gettin' air into the stem of a new clone maybe a worry, but yet to see it being a problem with an established plant. When ya think about, no one attends to the stems of a mum plant after taking cuttings.

Bit of a bumma you tend to be getting stunting with broken branches wdc. I can't say i've noticed that yet. If anything the branch will die off, or it tends to carry on keeping up with the rest. On a couple of occasions, i've noticed more vigorous growth. One in particular after a hail storm, broke the main stem of a plant 4ft above the ground and leaning over right angles to the plant. In that case, i just left it alone and it took off like wildfire, and within a 2 week period it began to throw roots out where it broke. The roots got to about 4 inches long before it was time to pull the plant. That was interesting to watch unfold... B)

may be if ya need some suport for it find some bamboo canes dude they work well

HEHE, that's the name of em sunny. I tried rememberin' the name of em last night, but the bugga didnt come to me at the time. :freak:

EDIT: Here's the sorta repair job i'd do in a worst case scenario Jimbo. I doubt your's would require it though. You'd quite possibly just get away with bringin' another near by branch under it to support it. If ya can keep the fan away from it's general direction for a couple of days, so it can repair itself a bit, then get the fan back on it like you would've had before the snappage, it should give it a bit of a helping hand. The movement will help strengthen at the break, as it heals itself in time.

Thanks - that was a top reply Indy, and you went to the trouble of PSing the image as well! :freak:

I have to say that the limb in question is showing no signs of stress or a loss of vigor, infact it's still growing!

I removed the tape and used the scrog net to hold it in place by placing it through a square that provided a tight join where it snapped. Same principle as the bamboo I suppose.

I think I'll post your diagram in the Problems & Diseases section as I think a lot of other people would gain from seeing that.

but you will have more buds come harvest with that branch on so put in the hard yards now

I like to try and stay on top of things so I hope it's going to pay well...! :scratchin:

Yeh Great reply/tute Indy :ack:

I was gonna suggest the stakes .. and or ..

G'day Jimbo and everyone who's broken a branch ;) ..

I see the sortof break your talkin about .. gotta treat all plant breaks just like a humans bone break Imo ..

That means a splint .. and maybe something for infection if the skin is badly broken ..

With a plant tho , especially one so hardy as Cannabis .. It's pretty easy with just a bambo splint of sorts ..

But with a branch break at the node as was highlighted .. You can just tie the branch back up to the upper main stem .. if its back in place It will be healed in no time lol

Also , alot of people recommend balming it with a good natural honey (or any honey lol) ..

Honey is a natural antiseptic and excellent for healing plants and humans alike ... I just use a bit of spittle to seal the wound tho :peace:

Anyway , I hope that made sense , I'm stoned as lol

Budman lol
