US marijuana 'stronger than ever'

By Maggie Fox in Washington

THE marijuana being sold across the United States is stronger than ever, which could explain a growing number of medical emergencies that involve the drug, government drug experts say.

Analysis of seized samples of marijuana and hashish showed that more of the cannabis on the market is of the strongest grade, the White House and National Institute for Drug Abuse said.

They cited data from the University of Mississippi's Marijuana Potency Project showing the average levels of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, in the products rose from 7 per cent in 2003 to 8.5 per cent in 2006.

The level had risen steadily from 3.5 per cent in 1988.

National Institute on Drug Abuse Director Dr. Nora Volkow fears the problem is not being taken seriously because many adults remember the marijuana of their youth as harmless.

"It's really not the same type of marijuana," Dr Volkow said.

"This could explain why there has been an increase in the number of medical emergencies involving marijuana."

The pharmacy department at Mississippi has compiled data on 59,369 samples of cannabis, 1225 hashish samples, and 443 hash oil samples confiscated since 1975. "The highest concentration of (THC) found in a cannabis (marijuana) sample is 33.12 per cent from Oregon State Police," the report reads.

I want this fks job, testin' some samples for some thirty odd years. Then make a statement that's some 20 odd years old, then modernize it with a big dose of speculation, and hope to get some credit for your apparent findings...

Well done Nora, straight to the top of the class for you luv... now find something else to waste the rest of your workin' career on... lol

I believe mj use can lead to some degree of mental illness. Not because of the drug itself. The argument about THC concentration is nonsense as we know, its got nothing to do with that or hydro chemicals IMO.

I think the problem can be that mj is no longer a party drug. Its something people tend to smoke in private more and more. The laws and the fact that smoking mj is not an easy thing to conceal in public, as well as the fact that more and more people are growing their own tends to lead to further isolation, both because you no longer need to rely on anyone else and for security reasons. Add to that the paranoia and pressure we feel with keeping this big secret (growing) from a lot of people we know, even close family and friends and at the end of the day you get a good recipe for a stressed, isolated, and unhealthy state of mind.

Its not the plant that is to blame, its the fucked up laws that we are forced to deal with. What an age we live in where people keep to themselves, harm nobody, and live in fear of the legal system.....

Notice that they dont actually give examples of what sort of medical emergancies they are talking about because its just random cases where the patient happens to be a stoner or it was complications from the use of other drugs.

Shhhh.. you're not supposed to notice that

A lot of 'medical emergencies' that are being experienced with drug use (including alcohol) amongst young people, seem to stem from the mentality that drug use is somehow a competition, it's not enough just to get stoned or drunk anymore, you have to be the 'most' stoned or drunk, preferrably to the point of passing out/throwing up/falling over.. every time and then do it again tomorrow.. and if you can smash something or someone in the process all the better.

The whole 'go hard or go home' mentality is great on the footy field, but will only cause grief when applied to drug use.. regardless of what drug you're using.

I say we need to find out why, and fix the attitude to fix much of the problems.

Perhaps I'm just gettin old.
