It's been much higher though, around the mid eighties an ounce cost more than an ounce of Gold, at one time Australia wide it hit $600 an ounce while Gold was under $400. What lowered the price was an influx from of weed from Papua New GuInea.

Today Gold is at $1675 .......... production costs are similar.

Who bought weed back in the 1980's? Not me for sure, not with all that lovely hash that was available. I was buying Lebanese Gold back then for $250 an oz block.

Another thing to remember, while weed prices are in AUD gold is valued in USD.

Back in the 1980's and 1990's the Aus dollar only bought 60 - 70 cents USD, I remember some people making exclamations about the price of weed against the gold price during the later part of the 90's... but of course they had failed to account for the curreny exchange rate between AUD and USD.

Even at record lows, gold was more expensive than weed... although to the casual observer of gold prices at the end of the evening news, it may have looked otherwise.

Another key difference between weed and gold is supply. When people want more weed it is relatively easy for new suppliers to enter the market because weed is what you'd call a 'renewable resource'.

Now gold on the other hand is quite different... it is not easy to source more gold for the market as gold is a 'finite resource'. So, when people want more gold than is already available, supply cannot rise, the price rises instead and this can be quite dramatic.

The extreme price of gold today reflects consumer confidence or, more to the point, the lack of consumer confidence in other investments such as company stock, property, bearer bonds, etc.

I grow me own, so VERY rarely have to consider buying it..... but good hydro in this town can go for $450 an Oz , ............which is crazy when ya can buy good quality bush with no seed this time of year for around $200 and its decent.

Peace. Nibbler.

I agree about the bush HN, not as inexpensive $(300) but better than the hydge-gotta ways to go before no buying, mostly refining management of plants in my case

Peace to you. v :sun:

Melb/vic u can expect anything from $180 to $400 depending who you know and quality etc. Havent had to chase for near on ten years now but peps who are looking are willing to pay the above$. A bloke I know paid $400 for some average bud last week, can't believe he paid that much considering this time of year.

A couple of years ago when I could score dealers were paying up to $350 per ounce.  It didn't matter if it was bush or hydro, just as long as they could sell it and at least get a bit of smoko for themelves.
