planting by the moon

Recommended Posts

Dude, I've been using the Zimmer calendar for all my planting, indoor and out, vegetables and other flowers we like, and it's never done me wrong. I got mine from a shop in the city for less than $10 and never looked back. It advises the best times for planting leafy plants, fruiting/flowering plants, root crops and also shows the times appropriate to harvest and so on. It goes by the idea that the moon has a profound effect on the water in all living things, like tides. For instance, the best time to sow or clone leaf crops (lettuce, spinach, any plant you grow for the leaf), is early in the waxing moon, as the water in the earth and plants is pulled to the surface during these times, and this facilitates greater germ rates and generally healthier, better yeilding plants. I use the "flower/fruit" section for my fav plant and since following the calender I've seen marked improvement.

This has nothing to do with dancing naked or sacrifices, but if it really get's you off, then sacrifice a small bud or leaf to the plant as you sow it! (just kidding, the only sacrifices you have to make is your time and effort in growing the stuff!) The calender isn't based on hocus-pocus and superstition. This has been reviewed again and again by gardeners all over the world and this system does produce healthier, better yeilding plants.

Here's the addy if you can't find a local hippy shop to get one;

Thomas Zimmer

Mt Cougal Rd

Tallebudgera Valley

QLD 4228

It's 7.50 aud with p+p included. A good investment if ever there was one. Oh, and it's designed for oz, so any other nationals here will have to find a local moon-calender of their own!

I'm not saying you can't grow a deadly crop unless you use this system, let's face it, it seems a little kooky, and I thought it was all just tradition. But this system does produce a healthier, happier plant if you use it. You can also check out an article in the Practical Hydroponics and Greenhouses mag, issue 66, p46, if you can get it. It goes through the various types of moon planting and compares their effectiveness.

Good luck dude, and have fun!

peace B)

Has anyone seen or heard of these Australian Aborginal calenders? or am I imaging it? because when I was living in Tassie, there was a small group of Tasmanian aborginals they claimed had this "little calander system" because of Tasmania's moody weather to help they collect, burn and plant stuff they reckoned it worked better than the traditional system the farmer used when they just plant in spring and shit like that.... They related to the moon or what?

Anyone here ever grew mj in Brissy's winter outdoors? Just curious.... B) Best to sow by the moon for QLD winter/spring crop? I know they wouldnt be a massive monsters, just small plants.

Cheers,

yea the burning thing the black fellas do im not shure exactly what they are doind but i guess its the same as after bush fires.they recon after a bush fire the trees that have been burnt and can regrow grow much better than before .i herd that they did a study and found that it was because charchole that was left on the tree mixed with the rain made the plants grow better and then someone made a product called smoky water i think they called it.i think the stuff was suposed to give you shorter node points busher as well .i think its like a spray but ive never used it but now youve joged my memory and will look to see if i can find some to try it out when the time comes.happy herb

Hey there guys, I've been using the calender to great success, but I can't see anything on it for cloning times! I have been using the "fruit/flower" sowing time as a guess, and the clones have done well, but does anyone know the actual phase that you should take clones in? It's got me stumped.

Thanks guys, I notice myself coming here more and more often.....

peace and good luck happyherb! :D

Very similar dude, it seems that most types of moon garden calender I've seen are all based on the same principles, phases of the moon, and zodiac signs. Now when I first heard about the zodiac part, I thought, you've got to be joking! For while I'm a hippy, I also have a strong skepticism when it comes to "astrology".

But I can't deny that since using the zimmer calender I've had much better germ, growth and flowering. And even though I don't quite understand it, it seems to work, so who am I to argue?

Oh, and as to the pruning thing, well maybe that could be a better time for cloning, but as yet I can't find any moon-planting guides that address the issue of cloning at all! Maybe others out there using the moon planting method have any experiences to share, vis a vis the best time to clone?

The fact that moon planting seems to have an effect doesn't mean that you should just rely on it solely to grow happy, healthy plants! You should only use the method as an addition to good horticultural practices, not as a replacement. You still have to learn how to grow the stuff well in the first place, but by using the moon to guide you, you'll give your plants the extra boost that makes the difference between a good crop, and a excellent one.

I hope that growers out there reading this will investigate the moon planting method and give it a go (if they aren't already), because I've found it excellent, and will never go back....

peace and may the force be with you all......
