2006 My Year in Review...

Recommended Posts

Thinking of blog ideas, like everyone, I thought I’d share my favorite moments from 2006.

Of course when I started thinking, I quickly concluded, I didn’t do anything this past year. Something most people suffer from, but it’s worse for me.

Right now I’m down to my last few grams of marijuana and remembering what I had for lunch is difficult. It’s not short-term memory loss from cannabis, it’s a symptom of MS.

With my last few crumbs of cannabis and my day timer, I present my highlights of 2006.

Jan. 06. – American refugee Renee Boje came to Toronto as part of Peace Summit 2006. Together we participated in an amazing women’s circle. Thirty very important ladies in the Canadian Cannabis Movement discussed cannabis and their lives. Many noted women activists participated. As part of the weekend we protested with Renee at the U.S. Consulate. Bright news of the year, Renee pleaded guilty in California court and came immediately back to her new home in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Feb. 06. – My friend Tom Shapiro had his legal Health Canada approved grow-operation busted. Tom was arrested and charged for cannabis production, despite Health Canada's permission to do so. I did several interviews with him both within Canada and around the world. Once again we made International News…

Apr. 06. – I attended the Free Pot Smoke Out rally at Hamilton City Hall, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada April. 20. My photo with Toronto Compassion Center’s Tracy Curly and my story, including LEAP involvement was mentioned in Canada’s fourth largest daily paper, Toronto Sun. There was a lot of cannabis at city hall that day. Yet, there was no fights, no reefer madness. Nothing. Approximately six hundred people. According to the article, “Police were ordered to simply keep watch as long as the demonstration was peaceful.” Sadly, for one day of peace, the organizers were arrested, the sponsoring business Up In Smoke Café was raided the following day.

Apr. 06. – The next day I attended a rally in Niagara Falls, Canada at the injunction of Highway 420. Despite the rain and arrests from the previous day, plenty of folks showed support. The Niagara Falls Review ran a great big story with us involved and two girls posing with pots on their heads.

May. 04. 06 – Made a major American News entity once again! Slate magazine from the Washington Post interviewed us for a story on medical marijuana. Well done I thought.

May. 06. 06 – Global Marijuana March (Toronto) had 15,000 people attend. What a day! It was amazing. We marched with the hoards of people down Canada’s longest road, Yonge St. The energy from the crowd was incredible. I loved it.... (to be continued)

Hi Alison,

Thanks for the insight into the struggle in Canada. I often look to you Canadians as inspiration.

The picture painted in our newspapers differs from the reality of Medi-Pot patients you tell us about in your blog. While Canada is much more advanced on the law reform road than Australia, it disturbs me that legitimate patients are still being arrested.

Looking forward to reading more posts from you in the future. Cheers
