What height to expect from a hydro plant ?

most strains will grow an extra 2/3rds the size when they switch to flowering.. you can keep them low by tying them down or kinking the branches... some poeple will use a rack and just keep tucking the branches under... also you can tip them.. but this wil cut the main bud size down... gives more budding sites.. but then tying down does too with out losing that main crown...

#1 factor in height is genetics, in other words it depends on each strain. For your first grow it'd probably be a good idea to start with an indica or indica-dominant hybrid as indicas are generally shorter than sativas so you shouldn't have any height problems at least. Northern Lights is a good example of a well known 'short n squat' strain

and are there ways to keep the plant at a smaller height range ?

Healthy plants grow faster so you can slow and/or stunt a plants growth by depriving it of nutrients for a short while, but that's a high stress method. You can make plants smaller but bushier by using training methods such as Low Stress Training aka LST (google it), and you can also keep plants relatively short by only vegging them for a few weeks before moving them into flowering. You can even bonsai them while they're in veg. Many options...

All of the above. There are a lot of if's and maybe's. If you are growing a number of cuts per light and have limited space, and are not sure about the strain, I'd only veg them for a week or 2, just long enough to settle in after planting them. Till you know how your strain performs there is always some guess work. If you are only growing 1 or 2 plants per light I would veg them a bit longer, tip them a couple of times and train the branches out to fill the area. Then flower them up. There is still a possibility of them growing too high. If this happens you have to start tying the branches down.

If you can give yourself a good 2m in height for your room, I would.

Plants will usually stay shorter if conditions are cooler, they tend to stretch more in the heat. If you can keep the room cool then you have a better chance of controlling height.

You can also spray the plants with paclobutrazol .... sometimes called Bonzi, this will keep them short chemically, but this chemical has never been approved for use on consumable plants so there is some risk involved.

i recently flowered 3 day old clones x7 in 1m x 1m x 2m tall room,

sog style so no training just the odd tipping of tallest plants/ strain, plants are 3 weeks into flower and standing at 1m tall + 60cm gap to light + 20cm for shade there is little to no room left to move light any higher :peace:

2.2m height if your using dwc, tall pots or flood drain trays like i used here Or you could try scrogging plants to control height.

new pic limit so heres a few pics from last weeks has been a while since ive flowered clones these guys are atleast 10x the size of the flowered clone.

1= day1 of 3 day veg

2= 4th day of flower

3= 10th day of flower

4= 17th day

5= 22nd day plants started to get heavy and needed support.

6= 22nd day close up of the only untipped bigbud crown.

hey krunk with the proper techniques already mentioned like tying down or SCROG you can manage most strains bred for indoor growing in a space as low as 1.6m. even lower is possible. but I would suggest making your growbox as high as possible. even if you don't need it for the growing space the bigger your growbox is the easier it will be to control heat, and also it will give you more flexibility if you want to change your grow style and give you room to add other equipment in there like a carbon filter if you want to.... :peace:
