you could pretty easily setup a run to waste hydro system outdoors. You'd just setup a a res that was elevated or uphill from your plants, run 19mm line down to your plant area with a battery operated solenoid to control the watering times and branch off with 3mm lines and drippers.

personally I don't think it would be of any great benefit. "hydro" buds aren't necessarily any more potent than "dirt" buds. The reason commercial hydro is usually more potent than bush is that indoor growers are usually more selective with the strains they grow, and they are growing them under more controlled conditions. but I think you will find that if you compared the same strain grown in soil an hydro the buds would be of similar potency. the big thing with hydro is its fast and clean which is a big factor for indoor grows. outside it doesn't matter as much... lol

pretty much all styles of hydro are able to be used outdoors ( some definatly more compatable than others ) all that changes when you move it outdoors is that you add environmental factors ( like more bugs , changing temps ect ect ) and ofcourse you are using real sun instead of articicial light

I have grown outdoor DWC tomatoes that went very well and I am hoping to get aquaponix system in place for next spring , atm I am learning more about fish life cycles and auquaponixs itself :peace:. Something you have to be sure of though is that your res is in a sealed container of some sorts , as having a tub of water just open to the air is bound ti invite in some nasties

I have to disagree with pipeman in saying that there is no real benifit once you move outdoors , because one of the key advantages comes in the availability of nutrients to the plants root system , and it is a fact that through hydroponics you can feed your plants at higher rates and also more regularly whilst having them take full benificial advantage of this.

I'm sure pipeman will have somehting else to say and as will others so I will leave the rest of my post untill after a few more comments have been made

Wick systems (bucket in bucket style) with a small float valve in each pot then plumbed to a higher larger tank works great soil and soil less.

No power or solenoids required or pumps etc just good old gravity

From experience dont forget to filter your on site water or you will quickly plug your valves and dump all your water drowning your babies

i have enver grown on hydro but i know alot of letuce strawberries and the like are grown hydroponicly but not under HID lighting. so i recon youd find tonnes of information if you looked up hydroponic vegetable gardens. if you want to do it outdoors you should try adn aquaponic system and run us all through it cause id be interested in seeing how well they work

as a side note I think a hydro setup in your back yard even for stuff like tomatoes is a security risk if you got a cupboard full of cannabis plants inside. hydro is commonly associated with cannabis so in my mind its a security risk to tell the whole neighbourhood that you know about hydroponics.

I mean if your neighbours work out you're a stoner and they see a hydro setup outside you don't have to be SHerlock Holmes to figure out whats inside...

Funny thing, when I first started growing under lights I had a big hydroponic vegie garden in the backyard, and my plants in the shed under lights in soil.

But then I put 3 plants in a hothouse in a flood and drain system. Large trays filled with river pebbles, huge pump, 200L rez. Didn't know what I was doing back then as it was over 20 years ago but I ended up with 3 massive plants filling the whole hothouse. Outdoor hydro is excellent if you have the place for it. But as the others have said, the quality is all in the strain. Back then it was all sativa, very rare to find any indica in Aus. It was crap to grow indoors, but grew excellent outdoors. These days I have seen plenty of the good indoor strains grown outdoors and they perform surprisingly well.
