Hydro can be as simple as some coco peat (coco coir) in a pot which is hand watered through to grodan slabs in big rotating tables, all will grow top notch pot some slightly faster than others but with the right nutes & additives, the right amount of light, the right temps and adequate ventilation (or CO2 in a sealed room) all will produce the same quality buds given the same genetics. The biggest difference between a great grow and a dissapointing one is research (or lack of it) and attention to detail, of course this goes hand in hand with experience (for most anyway, there's always some with black thumbs who kill anything green they touch and refuse to accept advice or do any research).

If I was starting for the first time again I'd go with either A basic coco in pots with either hand watering or a simple drip system (the nature of coco makes it very suitable for hand watering as it holds a shitload of moisture while providing heaps of oxygen to the roots), or I would build a DWC setup (great instuctions are pinned in this forum) this is more expensive and the growth rate is a little better but it's the automation of it that makes life easy once you get it all dialed in.
