Tourist fined for posting cannabis to himself

23 August 2006

A South Australian man who posted himself some cannabis to use during a holiday in Queenstown has gone home with a drug conviction.

Alexander David Wolper, 21, cellar hand, was yesterday fined $600 by Judge Stephen O'Driscoll in Dunedin District Court after he admitted importing 6.6g of cannabis, which Customs intercepted at the Queenstown mail centre on August 11.

Wolper posted the cannabis in a parcel with snowboard magazines and gloves before he left Australia, addressing it to the Queenstown hotel where he would be staying.

Prosecutor Sergeant Tom Scouller said when police spoke to Wolper in Queenstown last Saturday, he admitted importing the cannabis.

He said it was for his own use while he was on holiday and he sent it because the last time he was here, cannabis was difficult to find.

Defence counsel Campbell Savage described Wolper, a first offender, as "a naive young man who's made a mistake".

He said the defendant had tried to keep himself clear of the New Zealand criminal element by providing his own cannabis.

He had harmed nobody but himself and had added to the New Zealand economy through the money he spent while on holiday.

Mr Savage asked for a discharge without conviction, arguing the impact on Wolper of a conviction would be out of proportion to the seriousness of the offending.

The offence was really akin to simple possession and, in other circumstances, might have been dealt with by diversion, he said.

But Judge O'Driscoll was not convinced. He said importing any drug was a serious offence and, although the charge was not laid indictably and police accepted the small amount of cannabis was for the defendant's own use, there was a need to deter him and any others from offending in a similar way.

Wolper, who is leaving New Zealand at 6am today, was fined $600 which was to be paid immediately.

hi guys I went to queenstown last year and soon as we got into the terminal there were 3 sniffer dogs and 4 customs wankers. Everyone was searched immediately after disembarking. It was really full on.

The dog sniffed at my groin area but was immediately pulled back.

Didn't have anything down there luckily, just me muff!

Its getting worse out there people, we need to be so careful.

Cheers
