THE man accused of the murder of Janelle Patton told police shortly after his arrest that he had been smoking cannabis before he hit her with his car and he had "panicked".

A fingerprint expert also told the court that prints belonging to Glenn Peter Charles McNeill were found on the plastic in which Ms Patton's body was wrapped.

A statement by New Zealand Detective Sergeant Christopher Roberts, who arrested McNeill in February, revealed the alleged admission when it was tendered to McNeill's murder committal hearing.

Ms Patton's body was found at Cockpit Waterfall Reserve late on the afternoon of March 31, 2002 and it is alleged she was killed that same day.

According to Det Sgt Roberts' statement, after McNeill's arrest: "The defendant stated he had been driving that day, bent down to pick up some smokes and had hit her.

"He said he had been smoking cannabis . . . and when he got out and found she was under the car he panicked."

AFP fingerprint analyst Wayne Morrell told the inquest yesterday six good prints had been recovered from the black plastic in which Ms Patton's body was wrapped.

Of these, one was of McNeill's left ring finger and middle finger. Two others matched the palm of builder Steve Cochrane and three others were unidentifiable, but could not be excluded as being Ms Patton's.

McNeill's ex-wife Aliesha Taylor told the court she had told police she phoned her husband at home on the day of the murder and asked him to bring a sandwich to her work for lunch.

She said she had later changed that date to the following day, April 1, when Det Sgt Peters told her that the phone records for March 31 did not mention such a call.

The hearing continues.

Killer cannabis strikes again, lol judges and cops really need to become aware of the way mj effects people in reality rather than let people use it as a scape goat for their own stupidity.
