Hi all!

Hoping you may be able to help me with this little issue: I purchased a couple of new lucagrow globes, a 400W and 600W, off ebay, along with a ballast for each. The package arrived today, and upon opening the box and moving the bubble-wrap I heard a little squeak! Upon closer inspection it turns out that the filament in the 600W squeaks when the globe is moved. Now, I don't have a shade/globe holder to plug this into the ballast to test it out, and so have no way of knowing if this is a faulty globe or not. Is this normal, or does it sound (haha get it?!? ) like a dodgy light? Just need to know now, as when I get the shades in a few weeks I don't wanna plug the light in to find out it's too late to return it.

Cheers for the help!!!

If you take it along to a hydro shop they'll usually test it for you if you're nice to them. The arc tube inside a hid lamp should be stable, but still suspended in a careful system within the bulb. Some of them move around a little, but if the whole tube is rattling and looking dodgy to you, get it checked out. Take some photos of the lamps and ask the person you got it from on ebay if it's normal. These things can happen with transport. The main thing is that they know asap usually.

But yeah, if you have any concerns, just take it to someone who knows about this stuff and can see it. Worst case scenario you get a vertical mogul socket and use that to test it, might cost 40 bucks. But you may as well just get a shade really. Take the lot down there, including the ballasts and see what the proprietor says if you ask to test em there.

Hope that helps.
