Building a cool tube setup

Recommended Posts

It’s been running for more than 8 months and working great.

I have set it up drawing through a layer of zeolite as a filter. This layer is adjustable in thickness according to the strength of the odour to be removed.

The tray that holds the zeolite can be totally removed to increase flow or when there is no smell and the filter not required. The room air and the cool tube setup both get filtered.

It also doubles as a drying box……..note the wire racks at the top in a channel.

The expelled as is ducted out the bottom and and exhausted.

The pics are with the door removed.

Glass vase 500mmx150mm from discount store (Harry’s, Crazy Clarks etc)

Steel angle 50mmx50mm from Bunnings (The black stuff with slots in)

Aluminium U channel 25mmx25mm or better still 50mmx25mm

Golden Circle 3L juice tin

Suitable screws…self tappers or 3/16 bolts and nuts

First step is to buy the glass tube. I use vases that are readily obtainable in Oz for $28 at Crazy Clarks as well as many other similar discount stores.

They are about 500mm long by 150mm diameter.

Cutting the glass is the hardest job. First wrap foil tape around the tube to use as a guide to cut as well as help stop any cracks from travelling. Don’t worry if you get a few small cracks, just tape over them with foil and they should be OK

To cut one end off I use a angle grinder and a diamond blade (not segmented) I connect to my fan speed controller and adjust the speed down to help stop vibration. With the tube on a soft surface I roll the tube around while gradually and carefully scoring into the glass, keep rolling ( I put the tube between 2 long blocks covered in a towel) until you have cut right through.
