POLICE believe they have smashed a major cannabis production and distribution ring after seizing more than 60kg of the drug in raids across the Gold Coast, Victoria and NSW yesterday.

High-grade hydroponic marijuana with a street value of more than $600,000, as well as tens of thousands of dollars in cash and several valuable motorcycles, were confiscated by a large team of detectives.

On the Gold Coast, police raided 17 homes and charged 13 people with 37 offences including drug trafficking.

Two of the homes, at Miami and Mermaid Waters, had rooms converted to sophisticated hydroponic "greenhouses".

The rooms contained thousands of dollars worth of equipment, including huge 500 watt lightbulbs worth almost $500 each and expensive charcoal filters to hide the strong smell of cannabis from neighbours.

"You're looking at more than $10,000 to set one of these things up," a detective said.

State Drug Squad chief Gordon Thompson said the raids followed a lengthy investigation by his officers into an interstate drug cartel.

He said those involved were "big players" who had gone to elaborate and expensive lengths to grow marijuana.

"It's a sophisticated set-up where people are growing and then distributing it throughout the state," Inspector Thompson said.

"We believe that by conducting these raids this morning, we've put a significant dent in the drug trade around southeast Queensland."

Most of those charged were given notices to appear in court next month.
