Cartel smashed

Authorities have smashed one of Australia's biggest alleged drug cartels.

The Australian newspaper reports the group is accused of growing and distributing tonnes of high-grade marijuana for more than a decade.

Police allege 58-year-old grazier Alexander Malcolm Lane grew potent hybrids of the drug on at least 10 properties across Cape York and around Cairns.

Small helicopters were then allegedly used to fly the harvested crops from the remote plantations to a network of inland roads for distribution to Sydney and Melbourne.

Several people have been arrested, and more raids are expected in the joint police and Australian Crime Commission investigation, which has been on going for more than three years.
