Student charged over marijuana muffins prank

An honours student in the US has been charged with delivering marijuana-spiked muffins to a teachers lounge in a senior prank that sent 18 people to the hospital and triggered an FBI and terrorism investigation.

"I had no idea of the scope of my actions," Ian Walker, 18, said after he and friend Joseph Tellini surrendered to police.

They could receive 10 years in prison or more if convicted of felony charges.

Walker is accused of bringing adulterated bran muffins to Tellini's suburban school May 16 and claiming they were part of a Boy Scout project. When Lake Highlands High School employees ate the muffins, they began complaining of nausea, lightheadedness and headaches.

Most of those sickened were quickly treated and released, but Rita Greenfield, an 86-year-old receptionist, spent two days in the hospital.

"They were just thinking it would be fun to get these teachers all silly and giggly," Greenfield said. "I do not think of this as a prank at all. It has caused heartaches and hard feelings."

The FBI investigated because the case involved a contamination of the food supply at a school. A joint terrorism task force found that terrorism was not involved, but determined the muffins contained marijuana and turned up a surveillance video of the delivery.

Walker, who attends a nearby Catholic school, and Tellini, 18, were each charged with five felony counts of assault on a public servant, each of which carries penalties of two to 10 years in prison.

Because of the presence of illegal drugs, Dallas County prosecutors are seeking an upgrade to the charges that could raise the maximum sentence to 20 years, district attorney spokeswoman Rachel Raya said.

The teens were released on $US7,500 ($A9,875) bail each. Calls to Tellini's home and lawyer were not immediately returned.

Walker and his family have spoken in an apology-filled news conference at his lawyer's house.

"It was juvenile and stupid, and believe it or not, I thought I was only participating in a senior prank," Walker said. He will not be allowed to graduate with his class at Bishop Lynch High School because of the incident, his family said.

Ian Walker's mother, Caroline, said she first heard about the tainted muffins while watching the news with her son.

"My first thought when I saw it, because I am a mom, was, 'My heart goes out to the mother of that stupid kid,"' she said.

Jesus Fucking Christ, can you say overreaction? :peace:

OVER REACTION, Holy shit these yanks need to wake up to themselves, us australians do too I think but holy crap these guys take things too far and too seriously.

If they get convicted and serve time, then yes it's a big fucking problem. I can understand the idea of 'scare 'em straight', but this doesn't sound like it will be. They want to go all the way and ruin these kids' lives because of a prank - causing "headaches and hard feelings". Oh my, I'll get the tear gas.

geez, seems to me this sort of resembles what the cia done from 1958-1976 with LSD, MDA, mescalin and countless other hallucinagens on unwitting citizens... to the point where plans were drawn up to contaminate an entire towns water supply with LSD to see just how people would react.. not knowing they are tripping....

these tests led to aCIA agent jumping out of his 10th storey motel room window to his death.. they wanted to know how much LSD a person could handle by spiking his food and water for days on end... it was 22 years before his wife learnt the real cuase of her husbands death...

and these guys are freaking out about muffins spiked with pot??? which has proven medicinal values??? still not a good thing to give someone that didnt know or even smoke pot.. but really quite harmless compared to LSD hey?

Thats a good point you make there ss the hypocracy as always is sickening , im getting a headache now thinking about it , fuck id better go and have another cone as im alergic to panadol , i wonder how these peoples lives will be changed for the better after there new found revelations and theories realise through the partaking of the holy herb , it would be an interesting study putting aside all the criminal aspects and no doubt law suits . Was probably a fairly potent mix judging by the noticable affects its had on these peeps, still an 86 year old lady can have it without any harm coming to her for only a headache  mmm :peace: interesting isnt it :peace:

I eat it every day as butter and smoke, and very very rarely get headaches. :peace:

My dogs have in turn eaten more butter soaked weed from the compost than I thought possible. They are always fine by the next morning (they have a great time high too). It's all bs..

Teachers who have never had muffins :peace: ... not even at uni ... chewed a muffin but never swallowed

It is pretty serious drugging people without their knowledge even if the drug isn't lethal. What if one of those teachers got in a car and had a crash?

I think the punishment should reflect the consequences in this instance. If someone was killed or seriously injured as a result of this I'd be all for locking these kids up. But since thats not the case community service and probation or something like that is in order IMO. Note that the news article just reported the maximum sentences for the crimes they have been charged with, its pretty unlikely that a judge would impose the maximums in this case I think.
