Air stones - Help please

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I have decided to keep my existing 5" airstone for my bucket and I will purchase an air curtain from here:

http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/category10_1.htm

They are cheap and they take direct deposit for all us poor people without credit cards !

What's this I hear about powerheads?

From what I can gather they are just a water pump which pumps water around in the bucket which airates it?

Can anyone explain a bit more please and what is your own personal experience with powerheads?

Your spot on with the power heads, like a pump with a snorkel to intake air. Not as much air as a pump & stone from what I have seen.

I've been looking for an air curtain, thanx :applause:

thats the air curtain I use and have been for years they are great. They do clog though, but easily cleaned by just wiping it with your hand... they last for ages.. or until the end bit snaps off.. which wil happen eventually.....I ve had the same ones for about 4 years now....so good value I reckon

and thanks thc24 for the info, looks like that link above has the plastic ones too.... might invest in some of them again, I liked them .. but havent seen them around for about 12 years....... I thought I was the only one that has seen them....thankx mate...

those curtains are nice , HOWEVER they are fuckin useless with a standard air pump they just don't give enough power to get bubbles all the way around the curtin , you will only utilise the first 4-5 inches max , what your gonna what is a mini compressor , or at a minimum a 4 outlet pump that you use joiners to make the multiple outlets go into one airtube and then to the curtin try the MAP series of mini compressors , they are fucking fantastic , small and high powered , I'll see if I can get a few pics of mine , otherwise I know chato is using a map in his grow diary

they will set you back from 70 - 400 dollars depending which one you get , doign what you want the 70 dollar one will do it for ya

Thanks for the replies everyone, I have read them all over

I have a dual outlet 9500cc pump.

I will probably need to use one outlet for my single bubble bucket and one outlet for my reservoir (come to think of it, do I need a reservoir for one bubbler?) anyway..

That's the size of my pump is it still worth getting the air curtain do you think Pure?

Hi mate sounds like you need another pump, with the pimp your running atm one air stone is about all it will run, use a 4mm T to connest both outlets into a single 4 mm hose to the stone.

My pump runs 4 stones off 8 outlets this way for 100 to 200lt. the pumps can be noisy but since ive upgraded all roots are white as and no rot.

Hi THC thanks for your reply.

So you definately think I can only run the one airstone off my pump?

The 9500cc was the biggest pump they sell around here.

If you suggest I run the one stone off both outlets, then my next question is this.

Will I really need a reservoir for one bubbler bucket?

Is it worth it just for one bucket to go out and buy another $40 pump?

Thanks for you help mate

treestump, what i think happens is when you double the air lines is the air is pushed through stone faster and harder causing a lot of bubbles that spread further than weaker air through two stones. 9500cc is a different rating to mine she is 20L per hour, Most of the bigger pumps come with 4 x 4mml outlets/ 8 outlets or masive pump 13mm hose connector. Your pump is Fine but youd be pushing it the airate two resivors..

Buy another cheep one as its quieter to run two pumps over a big monster.

Im unsure on Bucket question but i think the res if for multiple buckets and easy of top ups and mixing.

There are a couple of DWC growers around see if there using a res or not.

good luck
