How noisy are centrifugals?

Recommended Posts

About to purchase a fan soon. Was gonna buy a 250mm axial fan (AllVent $220), but I will eventually need a carbon filter. Should I get a centrifugal?. Noise is a concern. My grow shed is right up against neighbours fence. Money is a concern, but if a axial isn't going to do the job I'm only wasting my money buying it. Can I get away with a axial?

Area= 10'x5'x6' or 3mx1.5mx1.8m

Could I get a Centrifugal and house it in a MDF box insulated with foam to reduce noise?

Yes the centrifigals do give out a whirring kinda noise, but that is reduced by about 15% by just fitting

a carbon filter

further noise reduction can be gained by building a box to house fan and cramming it full of underfelt, foam,

old blankets, or even unwanted clothes, also wrapping the inlet and outlet ducting in foam and blanket for about a meter either side of the fan...in my case this reduced the overall noise by about 50-60%

which made it quite acceptable for my installation

also the hydro shops sell ready-made silencers which encase the fan, the inlet and outlet with large padded type of ducting which is easy to put on and also reduces noise levels by about 50%. these cost about $100-150

as previously stated, axial would be the go if you have no need for a filter, but the moment you fit a filter the

axial cannot cope with the air pressure.
