Dying Seedlings

Recommended Posts

Hi, I germinated some seeds, potted them in some coco, then about 5days later the stem on the babies choked, shriveled up. Died. This is something i noticed a while ago when my cuttings died the same way. It seemed pythium+root rot was the cause. So this time i pulled it apart and didnt see much wrong with the roots, although a bit yellow. No sign of rot.

So i tested the ppm/EC of the coir it was 1.5-1.6 EC diluted!!! with 100mls of pure water so potencially a good 1.9 - 2.0 EC @ root level.

Damn i forgot to flush the coco coir clear before using it.

Because Im a bit rusty, what is the shrivelling up of the stem is due to?

Could it be something else as well?

AGAIN!

second batch of seedlings dying, what the hell? I flushed the coco, ppm around 35 (tap is 25).

what the hell?

Also I cleaned the containers in a bleach solution, rinsed..i've never been more steril. I dont know whats going on. seeds pop, i plant, water (pure filtered), place in 2 upside down clear plastic containers..they enlongate, choke..die?

some dont even get to open up the first sets of leaves.. Im really baffeled here.

any suggestions would help.

your water is clean, is it rain water? or filtered? if youve just filtered it likely hood is theres no nutrients for the seedlings.

Is your ppm at 35.. or 350

Oh I just read your new post, you posted that as I was posting...:scratchin:

have they got drainage holes??

it almost sounds like they are too wet...

Hey WF , this happened to me last year when i shot some seeds, at 3-4 days old about 6 of them just fell over and died on close inspection it looked like the stem had collapsed, the leaves and root appeared fine.

In my case i could only attribute these deaths to the fact that i added a couple of compact fluros to my seedling chamber which elevated the temperature a little to much for the enclosed space i had them in.

this is just an observation i made in my situation.

Hope you can get to the bottom of this problem as i know how frustrating it can be

no need to flush coco if its preflushed like most are these days, When you flush it is likley you get it too wet and kill clone or seed. Start im rock wppl and transplant, RW has simular issues but a cube is easier to tell when too wet by weight . I ve had probs trying to grow seed in coco overatering was always the problem a seed may only need like 5ml/10ml of water each day in coco pucks or pot simular size to 1 inch RW cube.

Temps prolly not they would have wilted or burned, likly to be a combo of things have you ever used this method before and id so any changes.

I think Coco is not suitable for starting off you seeds. If you do you sould use a small amont so it drys off and you also keep it moist very frequently. thc 'start in rockwool' sugestion is great. :scratchin:
