Nonmelanoma skin cancer is one of the most common malignancies in humans. Different therapeutic strategies for the treatment of these tumors are currently being investigated. Given the growth-inhibiting effects of cannabinoids on gliomas and the wide tissue distribution of the two subtypes of cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2), we studied the potential utility of these compounds in anti–skin tumor therapy. Here we show that the CB1 and the CB2 receptor are expressed in normal skin and skin tumors of mice and humans. In cell culture experiments pharmacological activation of cannabinoid receptors induced the apoptotic death of tumorigenic epidermal cells, whereas the viability of nontransformed epidermal cells remained unaffected. Local administration of the mixed CB1/CB2 agonist WIN-55,212-2 or the selective CB2 agonist JWH-133 induced a considerable growth inhibition of malignant tumors generated by inoculation of epidermal tumor cells into nude mice. Cannabinoid-treated tumors showed an increased number of apoptotic cells. This was accompanied by impairment of tumor vascularization, as determined by altered blood vessel morphology and decreased expression of proangiogenic factors (VEGF, placental growth factor, and angiopoietin 2). Abrogation of EGF-R function was also observed in cannabinoid-treated tumors. These results support a new therapeutic approach for the treatment of skin tumors.

Cannabis research of this type should have been carried out years ago, feel sorry for the mice though, could suggest a few politicians that could take their place, be the only honourable thing they ever did.

very interesting abstract I have always knew that cannabis slows down the tumor/cancer growth but it doesnt CURE them, just slows them down...... nice pixs of the mices ;) honesty, I know a lot of people will hate me for this, specially these animal lovers groups, but I don't care...I actually support experiments on animals BUT only on mices, rats and pigs.

Yeah yeah I know I am off tracked here... oh well anyway.....

I don't like seeing experiments on cats, dogs, specially chimps/apes.

There's plenty of mices, rats and pigs, I am sure the world won't miss a pig, there's always more on its way ::P: I mean look, humans kill and eat pigs, so what?, sciencists experiment on pigs and kill them... so what again?,

If these animal lovers groups argue that the animals suffer in pain during experiments, isn't what painkillers are for? or why don't the scientists just kill the animal's nerves system so they can't feel any pain? its simple as that.

I am not a cruel bastard, I just don't give a shit about these animals, I believe animals were created by god or mother earth or whatever its out there created the earth for human consumption..... I mean the chinese eat anything that has 4 legs and moves.... I have eaten and tried turtles, snails, cats, crickets, and snakes during my travels in Asia..... it was awesome and love telling people my tales and see their reaction when I mentioned that I have tried cats heheh.... meat is meat, its just the flavourings and spices makes them taste better ;)
