carbon filters

Recommended Posts

hi all

i have a few questions regarding carbon filters i was hoping someone could clear up for me

1. i notice they come in different lengths. eg 250mm diameter is available in 500mm, 800mm, 1000mm length. what is the difference between a longer vs shorter filter? (besides price difference) . would a shorter filter be less efficient or be more restrictive on the air flow? should one always go for the longest filter they can afford/use?

2. what length filter would you recommend in (for example) a 4 x 1000 watts HPS g-room with a 250mm centrifugal fan (500watt fan - very powerful).

3. where should the filter be mounted? before or after the fan? (i have been told that it doesnt matter provided that the room has negative pressure - i.e more air is being sucked out than being pushed into the room.) is it better to mount the filter in the room or in the roof?

4. if the filter is to be mounted inside the room - can it be mounted upright on its base on the floor or should it be suspended in the air at ceiling height? (hot air rises therefore outake ducting is more efficient up high right?)

5. is there any particular filter that people recommend? (i.e. brand). is $373.50 for a 250mm x 1000mm mountain air filter (new) about the right price?

6. does the use of a filter increase the temps in the room due to a decrease in ventilation?

thanks for any help

lol I can field a couple of these. My GR is 1k. The carbon filter is about 1200mm long I think, very heavy too. The fan is a 240w. From mid flower onwards the fan is on 24 hrs. Filter first, fan sucking thro the filter and exhausting outside the GR.

I'd reckon it best to ask the guys that sell the scrubbers. But no doubt the bigger the better. Make sure you get one that suits your fan too.

Mount it up high if you can. I have mine up above and next to the light shade. You'll wanna go high between the 4 1000's.

I never had any temp problems, except for my own temperature dropping! A scrubber makes things far more comfortable. No having to be stressed about the smell and trying to mask it etc.

Good luck with your decision mate.

thanks mullaway. how did u mount ur filter up high? do u have it suspended or mounted on boxes or something?

im thinking in the room is the only way to go - as i cant see them fitting through the manhole!

also im presuming the longer the filter the more efficient, so therefore worth the extra dollars

im currently using ozone in the ducting, but the new strain is going to pong so im going to have go the filter for extra protection

wont be able to mount it between the lights though - no room! ill have to mount it by the side, hoping i can rig up some chains and hang it from the roof up high

hi ozmade. yeah i know who he is. i buy alot of stuff from him he is good. he has the MOUNTAINAIR version. i remember reading a post by luke saying that the PHATFILTER is better as MOUNTAINAIR uses pelletised carbon whereas PHAT is granulated???? just wanted to clear this up before i bought them.

Also, i found this info on the hydrocentre website which answers my question regarding whether to install it inside our outside of the room.

"Carbon Filters

Carbon filters should be located in

the room, and air sucked from the

room, though the outer layer to the

inner core, then through the ducting

to a fan. Because the outer layer is

larger than the inner, this will reduce

back pressure compared with

pushing air into the core."

Hi KL,

I think you will find the mountain air are better now that there made in china, when in perth costs where high. i have one its 2 foot tall same size as muffler. Does not matter how you set it up but is easier to jelly rubber it to roof of grow box, i had many noise issues to deal with so i blow through filter after air noise is quitened in muffler. Dont use to much duct as mountain air carbon is quite fine and take about 40% of power off motor so get a fan rated to twice the size of room. My filter is rated to room with 4 6oo wt so id think that your after about the same size, when you first get it turn the fan upside down and blow loose carbon out (outside house) or you can fill the fan with carbon powder.
