Police seize millions of dollars of cannabis plants

22 February 2006

Police have seized nearly 5000 cannabis plants from plots around the Nelson region over the last five days after a helicopter spotting blitz.

Thirteen people now face prosecution over the haul reportedly worth millions of dollars.

In one bust 70 plants up to 4m tall were discovered in Golden Bay.

"I haven't seen them that big in a few years," operation commander Sergeant Steve Savage told The Nelson Mail.

The crop was protected with an electric fence, cyanide paste and possum or "gin" traps.

He said this was now standard practice among growers who didn't want wildlife interfering with their crops.

The annual cannabis recovery project, dubbed Operation Emma this year, runs from September until April.

Detective John Nicholls of Motueka police said last year they had a "spectacular" return for the whole operation.

"Time will tell whether it's the same this year. We can't just base it on the helicopter recovery."

Police were investigating 13 people who were expected to face prosecution.

Some plants were being held as evidence but others would be going up in smoke during a burn-off at a secret location.

goes to show there is a vast difference in the way police value a crop. There's 5000 plants here, some 4 metres tall and they estimate the value at $4 mil. A 17 yo kid got busted here in Aus with a couple of hundred plants not even a foot tall at Brighton Lee Sans and they said it was worth $1-2 mill?, can't remeber the details.

It's obvious that NZ cops sell there pot CHEAP!. Time to book a holiday to NZ!

Don't come to Dunedin thou, they will rip you off!!! they double the 'street value' whenever they prosecute you! :D

I had a mate arrested with possesion of 1/2 a $25 tinnie but charged with possessing a $50 bag

I have not yet tryed selling them any but I am sure they'd pay less than 25% of what they sell it for, giving the prices they charge!

On the other hand... this may be a good thing... maybe it means they will also buy it for more than its worth
