UPDATE: An Australian woman facing up to 10 years in an Indonesian prison for drug possession has admitted owning a small amount of cannabis, police say.

Barbara Kathleen Higgs, 43, was arrested on Sunday on Lombok island allegedly with 50 grams of cannabis and two small bags of seeds at Senggigi beach, where she part-owns a hotel named the Bulan Baru, or New Moon.

Higgs - originally from Pinjarra, Western Australia, and now a resident in Indonesia - is the latest Australian arrested under tough Indonesian anti-drug laws.

Lombok police Major Tribudi Pangestuti said Higgs was being questioned and was being held at a women's prison in the Lombok's capital, Mataram.

"So far she has admitted she used the drug for her own consumption," she told AAP.

Tribudi said Higgs, who has lived with her New Zealand husband in Lombok for five years, allegedly admitted that she bought the drug from a friend at Senggigi for 500,000 rupiah, or $A73.

"The friend was an Indonesian and we don't know how long she's been a drug user for," she said.

"Her case will be submitted to the prosecutor shortly, as soon as possible."

She said Higgs would be charged with possession under article 78 of anti-narcotics laws, carrying up to 10 years in jail and fines of up to $A73,000.

Higgs had been visited by Australian consular officials from Bali and offered assistance.

Her arrest comes amid a nationwide drug crackdown in Indonesia ordered by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

A Bali court last week sentenced two Australians to death and another seven to life in jail after they were arrested trying to smuggle more than eight kilograms of heroin from Bali to Australia.

on the subject of different penalties for child abuse and drugs

the americans link their aid funding to the laws they want enforced

hence harsh penalties for drugs because the 'war on drugs' is their baby

since they don't care about sex tourism, no pressure on the 'governments' who want aid to crack down on it

and we end up with a situation where 2 bags of weed in your room is punishable by more jail time than raping two little girls

that's what i call enforcing the 'american way'

to any americans out there, sorry to tar you with the same brush, those foreign policies are really giving you guys a bad name

Indonesia is just another nation with backwards ideas about drugs (like the USA..). It's filled with people who don't challenge authority (cos' they don't wanna disappear). I've travelled there extensively but will never go back as long as it punishes people for the herb. I'll spend my money only in tolerant countries. Vote with your dollars..
