Grow Room Temps

Recommended Posts

I was just reading a post by "Weedman" in grow room design and set up. Instead of hijacking his, I've decided to start my own here.

This topic would relate to everyone here this time of year "How do I deal with the colder temperatures?" as we are heading towards winter here in Oz :scratchin . One advantage that we have going for us HID users is that our lights create allot of heat already which is a problem in summer; which, in turn is handled buy adding more fans and more air circulation.

We could use this in winter, but in reverse. Too a certain extent. The plants need a minimum amount of Co2 to survive. So we have to at least draw in some air. But what if that air cools my grow room down to much?. We have a dilemma. Do I freeze my plants?, or starve them of Co2?. I know! :reallyexcited: .....I'll add a heater!. This adds to the cost of growing our plants, and limits the amount of HID lighting we can use. If we are already drawing the maximum current to run our lights there is no room to run a heater without sacrificing a light. :thumbdown

So the conclusion I've come to is to vent less, so that our heat source from the HID's is utilized, but supplement Co2.

Now, the $64,000 question. I'm a target shooter, I shoot air pistol which runs on Co2 and already have a HUGE bottle of Co2 that I can use. Now there are two different type's of Co2 bottles. There is one that just takes the Co2 as a gas from the top of the bottle (most commonly used for welding etc) then there is the one I have (It,..Um....fell of the back of a truck :whistling ). It has a pipe that runs from the outlet valve through the middle of the bottle and draws the "Compressed" Co2 as liquid from the bottom of the bottle. This is the same way as Co2 is used in softdrink dispensing machines you see at Mac Donalds etc, the softdrink is actually flat. As it is dispensed the Co2 is added to give you your nice fizzy bubbles and make the drink colder. When Co2 Decompresses from liquid to gas it an endothermic reaction. I'm gonna guess that this wont cause me a problem if the bottle has a regulator on it. The gas will decompress in between the valve and regulator and by the time in travels along the hose and is released it will just be gas. What are other peoples thought's on this?.

Also, Can anyone point me to a Url where I can research Enviroment controllers?. These control the correct amount of Co2 release, and syncronise Co2 release and venting. So the room more or less stays sealed of from the cold air from out side, the HID lamps provide the heat and the enviroment controller releases the Co2 for the plants to breath. When it gets to hot in there the enviroment control stops the Co2 release and vents enought hot air to bring the temperature down to a set limit. Once the ideal temperature is reached, the controller stops venting and starts releasing Co2 again.

One more thing. Does anyone know where we can find the formula that was posted in Overgrow's Faq's by Podge which has a formula you can use to estimate what your growroom temps will be when you factor in the wattage of your lights and the amount of ventilation you have. The Url for this use to be www.overgrow/edge/showthread=194443 <- I really think this should be added to this site Faq as it is a invaluable tool. The formula was something like Q=VxPxCXdT. The whole post eplained how to use the formula.

Yeah you could thermostat the exhaust/s or intake/s and run the extra light thro winter for heat.

I'll have a heater on in the GR once I see the temps drop a bit. It's a buga but gotta keep the ladies warm.

Good luck with the co2.

thats a top idea :thumbsup if it gets too cold, add another light and grow more bud
