Shoot, don't smoke

Recommended Posts

This letter to the editor was published in today's Sydney Morning Herald (6 feb 2006):

Shoot, don't smoke

The new cannabis laws provide for up to one year imprisonment for possession of small amounts of cannabis, while heroin users have government-approved injecting rooms ("Cannabis targeted in mental health drive", February 4-5). Macquarie Street, we have a problem.

Sad and true.. Its ok to walk around injecting stuff and walking like a zombie, the government gives you somewhere to go, free clean needles and even the crap to inject... these guys in power are really doing great stuff.. More riots, more violence, more major heavy drugs around... But less pot!!! well done.... :shy: what tossers.

The way they treat the smoke is just another reflexion on how wrong our society is , the injustice we suffer as smokers is a needle on a big stack of bureaucratic crap . Who are they to dictate to us wether we can pipe on , its a god given right , its bio friendly it enhances well being , its good for the soul , im tired of the injustice dealt out by government nobodies , its toxic its making me sick . We need a pot state , where smokers can live in peace . Wed have less mental health issues that way aswell!!

Follow up letters to editor, published 8 feb 2006 in the Sydney Morning Herald: I'm surprised by this flurry of activty by the Heralds letter page, they normally leave the topic of pot alone (or at least they rarely print mine  )

A grass injustice

If it wasn't so pathetic, it would be hilarious. Morris Iemma is going to bring in the harshest laws in Australia against the cultivation of cannabis because there is medical proof there is a link between the use of the weed and mental illness ("Cannabis targeted in mental health drive", February 4-5). Hey, Morris, smoking has a medically proven connection with a litany of diseases. Every day in NSW, 18 people die of smoking-related illnesses; the cost runs into billions. So let's get consistent. Either legalise cannabis and rake in the taxes and excises, as you do for tobacco products, or ban tobacco products and introduce laws to stamp out its production, as well.

Alex Jones (Letters, February 6) raises a very good point. I believe that Morris Iemma is targeting cannabis smokers because they are a much softer target. He'd have to be crazy to go after the young, drunken maniacs that ripped up Cronulla recently. And cannabis smokers will go much more quietly.
