Cannabis plants worth $4m seized - Drug Squad & Tweed/Byron LAC

3 February 2006

Cannabis plants worth $4 million have been seized and one person has been charged during a five-day operation in the State’s far north.

Throughout this week, officers from the State Crime Command Drug Squad and Tweed/Byron Local Area Command, with the assistance of Polair and the Dog Unit, removed 2250 cannabis plants.

Some of the plants measured as high as 3m and are worth a total estimated potential street value of $4 million.

This week’s operation – named Strike Force Lush – was part of the Drug Squad’s annual Cannabis Eradication Program.

Officers began work on Monday, spending the five days removing plants growing on Crown and private land at Tyalgum, Uki, Chillingham, Upper Main Arm and Byrill Creek.

On Wednesday, a 43-year-old woman was arrested on a property at Upper Main Arm. She was summonsed to appear in Mullumbimby Local Court on Thursday 2 March for the offence of cultivate prohibited plant.

Police will allege they seized 48 cannabis plants growing on the property, worth an estimated potential street value of almost $90,000.

Meanwhile, Tweed/Byron Local Area Command detectives are continuing their inquiries to identify the persons responsible for growing the plants.

Anybody with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous.

why are they uses police dogs in this raid - this seems to be a first for me.

Prehaps they use the dogs to track further plants when a plot is found... prehaps the dogs can sniff cabnnabis from a great distance.

also, I wonder what happens during a operation when it rains.. obviously they wont fly their choppers looking for plants when its raining.. so do you think that means a day of their operation was wasted (or, time means money)- or they will just add an extra day?

dogs are used in raids all the time, they use them to search for things like guns, corpses, buried drugs, etc...the majority of the time they dont find anything, but they take them just incase....

why wouldnt they fly a helicopter during the rain? they are designed to handle alot of conditions including extreme heat and cold, i have also seen them flying in snow fields, in heaps heavy rain, etc...all they need is radio contact with their fellow pigs on the ground and they can hover over a crop and assist in ripping out the plants :thumbdown

The infrared dosent work aswell when its raining , cannabis has its own heat signature , plus visibility would be diminished for general spotting , its funny when i was in nimbin last there were notices on the shop windows saying polair is doing there annual raids , only in nimbin

its great when the locals look out for each other :smoke

As far as i knew dogs are a common occurance at drug raids wether it be suburban or rural or bush , there noses are like 50 times more sensitive than ours , but dont quote me on those exact figures , they can basically smell cannabis if trained just driving past your house but unless there commanded of course its no bother . I know there capable of having multiple sniffing capabilities , im wondering do you think the ones at the airport are just for say cocaine and bombs or would you think theyd have cannabis training aswell ? I walked through sydney airport with 2 blocks of black morrocan after an african trip a few years back , probably only 3 grams in each sneaker , a beagle was near me but didnt pick up on it .So im thinking there focusing on other things at airports , but of course this could change with the corby thing .

Its hit and miss wether theyll raid your house with dogs or without , if they dont use dogs its a fucking relief , the one time i have been raided and busted because a fuckhead dobbed me in there was no dogs , i told the fuzz i had an ounce ( the funny thing was i had so much going on in my head i couldnt find the dam thing for a while so here i am walking around saying wait there its here somewhere just give me a tick to the pigs , because i did actually have a larger quantity else where, so took a smaller bust etc didnt want those fuckers bothering my misses and kids at the time anyway , it was fuckern funny though ) ive always had dogs anyway which adds another dimension to how there dog will cope , they could be scared nervous of your dogs etc and if you go and lock your dogs in the backyard they usually wont bring there animal out there . Hence , bury the shit in the backyard or throw it in the otto they wont usually look there either and always have a smaller amount to throw at em .

Dogs in bush situations , could be used for detecting people still in the area and chasing them down .
