Call to end marijuana leniency

Recommended Posts

THE Federal Government has urged every state and territory government to get tough on cannabis in a bid to reduce mental health problems.

Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Christopher Pyne yesterday called for cannabis use and possession to be recriminalised.

Cannabis possession is criminal in all states but with varying leniency.

In Victoria, the maximum penalty for cannabis use or possession is a $500 fine. First or second-time offenders with up to 50g may be cautioned.

Mr Pyne said it was time to make cannabis possession criminal no matter how small the amount.

"We must do more to tackle the perception that cannabis is a harmless drug," he said.

The guy is pissing into the wind, most politicians think of votes first and they should be aware by now that there are enough mj users in Australia’s population to have people like him voted out at the next election.

"...there are enough mj users in Australia’s population..."

I agree Tom, that marijuana smokers in Australia must be a sizable minority. :thumbsup

Why do they insist on tying the legal status of something to its health properties? Everyone knows that the legal status of a drug has nothing to do with its health properties seeing as, for example, alcohol and tobacco are legal! They should determine the legality of a substance by its usage rather than as to how the health effects are perceived or otherwise imagined. :D For example: the first 20 most popular substances should be legalized. Pot say, would in the top four of alcohol, caffeine, tobacco and marijuana. Clearly ongoing use, and hence popularity is tied to how healthy something is for a person as well as to how compulsive it might be addictively. Repeat business is essential for a drug trade to remain healthy, as the marijuana one clearly is, and the healthier the drug the longer the drug user continues with it. Marijuana is safe and despite the government propaganda to the contrary, it is one's own will which always provides for the strongest incentive to give it up and never drug prohibition!

Few people on this board would argue that pot is addictive. (I am not addicted by the way. Just because I like to have it every day! Heh-heh.) Marijuana smoking to me is not the result of a compulsion like addiction but is a desire for the effects. The argument at this point always shifts from the long-term health effects to the short-term effects and the merits of being stoned. Here is where conventional wisdom goes completely off the rails. Everyone who smokes pot knows that it has virtually the opposite effect to what the government says it has. Whereas they say: "it interferes with your concentration" it's has virtually the opposite effect. I would say that marijuana switches on the brain and improves concentration. Then they say: "you concentrate more but you then you don't remember it". That's rubbish, you brain probably works about the same in those fundamental ways. It's not that strong a drug. It doesn't create blanket impairment for example, as alcohol does.

So, the government should stop pretending that their drug prohibition is about "protecting" anybody and we should call a spade a spade. There is a type of oppression going on here and I don't like it.

quit cold turkey for 7-14 days and i think your attitude will change :D its mentally addictive, there is a difference between those effects compared to that of say a herion user who gets physically addicted, but none the less it is addictive...

Some sativas are really good for concentration, memory & creativity, daydreaming with vivid clarity etc.

Many indicas are more sedative for want of a better word right now.
