Cannabis seized in Mt Russell raid

Recommended Posts

THE Inverell Shire public has once again been praised by police for uncovering yet another drug stash, this time more than $108,000 worth of dried and undried cannabis at a rural property at Mount Russell near Delungra.

Police uncovered 54 plants and a large amount of dried cannabis during the raid on Tuesday before receiving information that linked the property to a Mulligan St, Inverell address which was also searched and 100 grams of cannabis found.

A Mt Russell man has been charged with cultivating a commercial quantity of cannabis and possession of a prohibited drug.

The man will face Inverell Local Court on February 2, 2006.

Tuesday's search was just one of about 15 searches done in the past six months with a total of $1.5 million of drugs in street value found.

In November public information also led Inverell Police to search a Bonshaw property owned by Lewis Arthur Kerr, where they allegedly found 360 cannabis plants, 50kgs of high quality dried cannabis and more than $70,000 in cash buried in drums on the property.

He appeared at Inverell Local Court on December 22, 2005 and granted conditional bail and will appear in Inverell Local Court again on January 19, 2006 to defend the charges.

Inverell police Detective Sergeant Tony Ehsman said public information had been the backbone of most drug busts in 2005, and police would be relying heavily on tip-offs during the rest of the cannabis peak growing season.
