Drug arrests at music festival

Recommended Posts

VICTORIAN police have charged two people with drug offences after sniffer dogs were used to sweep a Melbourne dance party today.

The pair was charged with drug trafficking and possession following the search at the Summadayze dance party at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl today, police said.

Warnings were issued to 31 other people found to be carrying cannabis.

Four passive alert detector (PAD) dogs were used to search the festival.

Summadayze, which was now in its eighth year, featured local and international acts including Fatboy Slim and The Glimmers.

Police estimated 20,000 people attended it today.

Sniffer dogs detected drugs on more than 60 people at the festival last year, police said.

Penalties for trafficking illicit drugs include a maximum fine of $3000 or up to 15 year's jail, while a maximum fine of $500 exists for possession.

Both people charged were bailed to appear in court at a later date.

Paramedics took six people to hospital from Summadayze and the Sunshine People dance party at Docklands today with suspected drug overdoses.

The patients were aged between 18 and 32, Metropolitan Ambulance Service spokesman Peter Swan said.

"(They were) all in a conscious state, difficulty breathing, palpitations, fast heart rate - the usual signs of this type of drug overdose," he said.
