New Drug Discovered During Bust

Recommended Posts

NEVADA COUNTY — Investigators in Nevada County are checking out an apparent new type of illegal drug that turned up during a bust there this week.

On Tuesday, officers from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Narcotics Task Force, served a search warrant at the residence of Zachary Michael Fisher, 22 years old, on Sutton Way, in the Nevada Woods Apartment complex in Grass Valley.

While conducting the search, officers said they discovered marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms, suspected LSD, and a white powdery substance, suspected of being a new hallucinogenic drug called 2C-I (2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenethylamine). Officers also said they located evidence of an indoor marijuana grow, which led them to a residence on St. Ledger Forest, in Grass Valley, where the existence of an indoor grow was confirmed.

The search warrant was obtained when the suspect allegedly tried to mail about 2 ounces of marijuana via UPS. Zachary was arrested and charged with cultivation of marijuana, distribution of marijuana, and possession of controlled substances and booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.

Substances will be analyzed by the Dept of Justice Crime Lab to confirm the compounds.

Interesting news story Tom! ::devilred::

I did some research and came up with a bunch of stuff - apparently its a few years old. Cutting and pasting....standby.....

2C-I is a psychedelic hallucinogenic drug and entheogenic phenethylamine that was developed and popularized by Alexander Shulgin. Its full chemical name is 4-iodo-2,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine. It was described in Shulgin’s book PiHKAL. The drug is used recreationally, and perhaps as an entheogen, however no medical or industrial uses have been reported. It is mostly commonly encountered in the form of its hydrochloride salt, a fluffy white powder, and has also been pressed into tablet form. As it has only recently been popularized slang terms for 2C-I vary, including the terms "eyes", "ice", and "twice", although the word "hyperglitter" has been preferred.

Recreational use

In the early 2000s, 2C-I in powder form became available for purchase from several online vendors of research chemicals in the United States, Asia, and elsewhere. In 2002 and 2003, tablets of 2C-I were being sold illegally in nightclubs and at raves in Denmark and in the United Kingdom as a club drug, with tablets often being sold under the guise of being MDMA or a mixture of some Amphetamine (which it is not) and LSD.

Effects

2C-I is almost always taken orally, although it can also be insufflated, smoked, or administered rectally as well (As with all phenethylamines of the 2C class, 2C-I is incredibly painful upon insufflation). A recreational dose of 2C-I is commonly between 10 and 25mg, although doses as low as 2mg have been reported to be useful. The onset of effects usually occurs within an hour, and the effects of the drug typically last somewhere in the range of 5 to 10 hours. The effects of the drug are often described as quite similar to those of its close chemical analog 2C-B, combining psychedelic or hallucinogenic effects typical of drugs such as LSD with the empathogenic or entactogenic effects of drugs such as MDMA (ecstacy). Some users report that the effects are more mental and less sensory than those of 2C-B. Users of 2C-I do, however, tend to report a physical stimulant effect, often quite strong. Although unpleasant physical side effects such as muscle tension, nausea, and vomiting have been reported, their incidence in the use of 2C-I appears to be less common than in the use of some of the other closely related phenethylamines such as 2C-T-2 and 2C-T-7. User reports have said that 2C-I produces flashbacks in the weeks following its use. These flashbacks can last anywhere between seconds and hours, and manifest as a return of the hallucinogenic effects of the drug. Some users report being able to trigger the flashbacks at will. Note however that these flashbacks do not occur in the majority, but have simply been observed in a selection of users. They are thought to be similar in nature to LSD flashbacks, and not particularly harmful or even remarkable (for a psychedelic drug).

I found that on some chemistry site.

The picture I found is from Erowid. Good old Erowid

I never understand how they are able to take "new" drugs and instantly make them illegal. What is their basis for doing this. Dont they have to do tons of tests and say "ok, well we have found that this drug causes impared vison and reflexes, is addictive, causes hostile rage and can lead to death if consumed in excess, there for it should be illegal" or something like that. Gee, wait a sec, I just described alcohol there, how about that :devilred:

But seriously, it seems like they can instantly make things illegal, while other things like alcohol and nicotine never even get looked at or considered for if they should be illegal or not, and other things are instantly made legal like viagra, even though it causes heart attackes in a large amount of people.

WTF ???

Meerkat, I reckon you touched on the exact reason about why these kinds of drugs instantly become illegal in your post!

I have a theory..... :scratchin (I say this alot) that its the same reason marijuana is illegal - the ciggarette and alchohol bigwigs. Those guys have some SERIOUS pulling power in the society of today, and if you had that much power and could use it, would YOU let a new and potentially better product hit the market and screw with your monopoly? Well, you probably would - but your probably a nice guy! lol

I was reading an article from NIDA I think it was that had some scientist saying that if ciggarettes, alchohol and marijuana came out together, tomorrow, the only legal one of the three would be marijuana :sly (due to it being non-addictive, benificial in many cases, less damaging to yourself than cig smoke and natural) Its only because ciggies and alchohol have become so accepted in our world that they are legal and mj (and other drugs) arent.

I could be horribly wrong, but I reckon it's got a ring of truth to it.

Analogue laws my friend. Make one molecular structure illegal, then anything further down the line created they have it covered. Ridiculous but eh that's governments for you.

The cops are always a bit behind the times, especially in the regional areas of the USA.

If it were invented today then it would be made illegal, it's just that there are too many "traditional" for it (and the taxes of course), marijuana is not illegal because it is bad for us but because several multi-national companies would lose many millions if it were made legal.
