Wind Turbine Generator

I was on the Jaycar site looking at there gadgets and came across this Wind Turbine Generator. By the specifications it lists this could provide enough power to run a 250w HID light? I don't have the room where I live for this but if I had the room or lived in the country or on a large property I wouldn't hesitate to get 4 of these things to power 4x 250w HID's. wouldn't that be COOL- literally, (I know bad joke :) ). The price at first may seem a bit steep but if you live in a especially windy area then these things would pay themselves off quite quickly I think... :scratchin ?

What do you guys think of this product?

Wind Turbine Generator

At long last we have sourced a wind powered generator that is NOT a toy. The unit is quite massive and ruggedly built. It will generate 200 watts at wind speeds as low as 8 metres per second. It will deliver useful power at a gentle 3 metre/sec breeze or give up to 300W at higher wind velocities.

The 62kg unit features a 3 phase permanent magnet alternator with a serious 2.1 meter diameter 3 blade rotor. The unit will withstand wind speeds of 40m/sec (144km/hr). All mechanical components are either cast steel or aluminium.

The unit has a 28V output which will charge a 24V battery bank (There is no point in 12V systems at this power level. If you require 12V, tap it from a 24V system.)

Included is 4.5 meters of tower piping, tower base, guy wires, steel rope clamps and other mounting hardware. Some skill is required in construction e.g. concreting, mechanical assembly and rigging.

The unit is made in China clearly for a remote application. Alas, the instructions are woeful but assembly s straightforward. You have been told!

Wind turbines provide far, far more power per $ - provided you have wind. Most places however have some wind over a 24 hour period. If you have been looking for a decent wind generator but have been scared off by the price this product is for you.

Note: The product is supplied in three wooden crates, with a combined weight of 71.5kg. Not all stores will be carrying the unit from stock due the lack of space.

just one of those would pay for itself in around a year, just in electricity costs, dont mind the many ounces of buds you can grow every couple of months with that :reallyexcited:

seriously, if i lived out on a farm and owned the land and my house, i would have heaps of those wind generators in the yard and solar panels on the roof, would pay for itself in no time :)

The problem with wind generated electricity is storage. It is relatively easy to generate enough electricity but batteries are needed for storage to ensure continuity of power supply. There are renewable energy home electricity systems on the market which will enable you to sell your surplus power to the power company when needed and buy it back when you need it. I think this type of system is a more viable alternative. Although $12,000 for a small house.

while its true that the battery requirements for wind generated power are fairly large and the initial investment in both the batteries and the windmill, etc. would be huge, the befits IMO outway the costs + its healthy for the environment :thumbsup

it should also be possible to connect up one of those windmills + still be connected to the grid so when there is no wind, you still have power....the windmill would merely decrease your power bill but if you generated enough power to send some along the grid, energy australia or who ever you are with send you a cheque instead of a bill :thumbsup i saw that on discovery science because they were doing a wind power special and they went to a farm in SA that had a huge wind generator which earned over $5000 a month and powered the owners and their neighbours houses free of charge as well :smoke
