3x 400HPS Vs 2x 600HPS?

Recommended Posts

Got a quote yesterday for the following

2x 600HPS Ablite Kits - Medium

400MH conversion (Teporary until I can afford 2 more 600's)

4 outlet Light Management Unit - with breaker

Ozonator skunkbuster

Spectrum 10" inline fan - comes with 3m of duct

6m 10" duct

6m 200micron panda film

All the plastic tube and corners needed to make a room 2m x 2m x 2m

$1200, but the owner will be back tomorrow and she promised me a better deal :thumbsup

I plan on getting 2 more 600HPS kits and running 600MH sunmaster conversion lamps in so I can alternate the globes easily (all globes HPS and MH will be sunmaster)

The amp ratings you gave are incorrect perrye75, as the ballast itself uses some amps. People tend to forget this. Always check the details on the ballast and if it doesn't have this written on the side, ask the seller why.

Reactor control ballasts start high to begin the lamp, and then drop down in power as the lamp operates. Constant Wattage ballasts cost more, (only available for 1000w afaik) but are able to start lower and then move up to operating amperage.

It has often been said that 2 HPS to 1 MH provides the best light for growth and bloom, with a more varied spectra to produce healthier, happier and higher yeilding plants. You could also consider utilising Spectrum 130w Compact Fluoros to offset your HPS spectra into the blue range rather than getting an MH conversion bulb (which will not be as good as a dedicated MH system, they're actually about 360w) and place these in the canopy as side/interior lighting.

You could also look into a lamp mover, as these will allow you to get away with less lamps per square meter of space, but these cost a lot and are not as popular as simply putting in another lamp. If you have refrigerated air-con this also removes another reason for using a lamp mover, as you don't have heat issues to contend with.

Hope that helps.

btw, elkel is spot on, PAR is more important than lumens. People see lumens, plants see PAR. ;) That said, 600w lamps tend to be more efficient than 400 or 1000w units.

My hydro shop was told today by their lamp supplier that GE and Sunmaster globes are the same and are produced in the same factory

Can anyone confirm this?

I can't confirm or disprove it, however I can offer evidence which leads me to believe it's not true....

Sunmaster = Venture Lighting = Advanced Lighting Technologies

(chain of company ownership, sunmaster is owned by, is owned by etc...)

General Electric Lighting = General Electric.

Unless someone bought General Electric (it's possible, but unlikely), the companies are indeed seperate companies with seperate technologies etc etc...

It's possible they use the same factory to manufacture their product, but so do Intel and AMD for alot of sub-components they use, ultimately manufacturing processes are very similar - the design of the finished product is what differs.

- Just my well-read 2c, as usual ;)

Thats what I was thinking, in any case I said to them I don't mind waiting the extra day for Sunmaster lamps to arrive and also pick up the rest of my equipment.

I am getting towey though ;) can't wait to pick all my new toys up :;):
