Dope Scandal

Three students at an exlusive Melbourne private school have been caught smoking marijuana in Fiji.

They could have been jailed but instead they were ordered home in disgrace from the school excursion.

The students have been labelled dopes by teachers and politicians.

A parent of one of the three teenagers claims his son was preyed upon by Fijian locals pushing drugs.

I was on their final night that the students eventually took up the offers.

For some reason I don't think Fijian dealers would be giving the shit away :D

Just found this follow up story - from the Herald Sun .. a parent with a cool attitude :scratchin or maybe its just a really good line .. to save son's reputation and career prospects :)

Dad proud of grass smoke son

A FATHER of one of the boys caught smoking marijuana on a school camp in Fiji says he is proud of how his son has coped with the incident.

The man, who did not want to be named as he did not want his son identified, yesterday spoke of the scandal.

The Herald Sun yesterday revealed three 15-year-olds from St Leonard's College in Brighton had returned home in disgrace last week after teachers found they had been smoking marijuana.

But the father disputed statements that the boys had bought the drug from locals, saying they had only sampled it.

He said that the students were in a traditional Fijian village and had been offered one cigarette by a local pusher as a "sample" during a farewell ceremony.

"The kid took that one cigarette but did not purchase any more," he said.

"Some time later the three of them did light it and have a puff."

The parent said the teachers did not know the boys had smoked the joint until they came back to Australia.

"It was a very sobering experience (for him)," the father said.

He said he was pleased his son had not bought drugs and he was proud of his son for coping with the situation over the past few days.

The parent said that he did not know what kinds of pressure the boys were under to accept the joint.

He said he would not be giving any extra punishment to his son.

"This little incident has allowed us to have a somewhat frank discussion on marijuana," the father said.

He said he had no fears that his child may have ended up doing a lengthy jail sentence if caught.

"These are three children that have been given one cigarette by a pusher," he said.

"I have faith in the Fijian courts that they wouldn't have allowed that to happen."

College principal Dr Roger Hayward confirmed no money had changed hands.

"Whether money was involved was totally irrelevant," Dr Hayward said.

"They should not have tried it at any stage."

He said the college was reviewing its "risk management" of future school camps.
