Police make "huge" cannabis bust

Nov 22, 2005

Some Auckland drug dealers could be in for a lean Christmas after police raided what they describe as a "huge" and sophisticated hydroponics cannabis operation.

Up to 1,000 plants and tens of thousands of dollars worth of cannabis heads were discovered in a warehouse in Onehunga on Monday after police followed up a tip-off from the public.

The heads have a street value of around $5,000 a pound and police say the total haul is worth up to $1 million.

Detective Sergeant Dave Nimmo said the alleged operation was huge and sophisticated.

"The cannabis plants range in size from seedlings to fully grown trees, so we've got a fair bit of product to move," Nimmo said.

Police also found a crossbow and a quantity of what appears to be methamphetamine, or ice.

A 35-year-old man from Onehunga was arrested and faces charges of cultivating cannabis and allowing a premises to be used for the purpose of cannabis cultivation.

Nimmo says officers will execute further search warrants over the next few days and further arrests are expected.

'Hidden' passage found in fashion building

24 November 2005

By DEBORAH DIAZ

A "concealed" passage leading to a hydroponic cannabis operation was found yesterday when police raided the neighbouring building housing fashion label Insidious Fix.

But the owner of the knitwear fashion label's Onehunga building says there is nothing sinister about the find – the two buildings, which back on to each other from neighbouring streets, were once part of the same complex.

The passageway had been blocked off years ago for safety reasons, Phil Smith said.

Insidious Fix designer Jason Crawford has been charged with cultivating cannabis, possession of growing equipment and allowing a premises to be used for cultivation.

Mr Smith said the two neighbouring buildings used to house Earlybird, one of the country's largest knitwear companies in the 1980s and owned by Crawford's uncle.

The building where the cannabis was found has a different owner – it is owned and leased out by a property investment company, the James Kilpatrick Group.

There have been no further arrests in the case.

Police have been trying to pin down who had access to the indoor cannabis plantation, which covered two floors of a Selwyn St building.

Inquiries have centred on that building, but police have been investigating links to the neighbouring property, where gardening equipment was found on Tuesday.

Police found the passage when they executed a second search warrant on the building housing Insidious Fix yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said the low-ceilinged passage linking the building was in a storeroom. It was blocked by shelves and equipment, she said.

The scene examination of the growing operation was almost complete. About 250 cannabis plants were found, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
