Cannabis is worst drug for psychosis

Recommended Posts

Yes, excellent article and very relevant as is based on current research. One of the things to remember is "psychotic illnesses" and "psychosis" are 2 separate things. One can have what is classed as a psychotic illness i.e. schizophrenia, but not have a psychosis. This is one of the main misunderstandings the general public have (including politicians) that leads to misinformation on this topic. I also strongly believe based on my own experience that one must first have a genetic predisposition to mental illness for cannabis to "trigger" the illness. In some circumstances it may be severe depression that leads people to self medicate because the community acceptance and assistance is just not there.

I would however take issue with the authors assertion that mental illness has been on the decrease for the last 40 years. This is coincidentally the amount of time that successive governments have been taking funding away from mental health facilities, increasing at an exponential rate the last 15 years or so. If the person has never been diagnosed by a professional of course they never become a statistic. Coincidentally there have been recent studies done in W.A. that indicate more than half of the prison population have some form of mental illness. The biggest growth industry in Australia at the moment is building prisons. Guess where all those extra prisoners are coming from! Unfortunately there are almost non existent mental health facilities inside prison so the person remains a statisitic, but not a mental health one. Its an example of how the government can never solve a problem by leading by ignorance which is what John Howard is doing on this issue. Making the penalties more severe for illegal drug use will only force people who self medicate to go further underground therefore exacerbating their problems and increasing their exposure to other possibly more dangerous drugs such as amphetamines. In West Aus we are standing on the top of a tidal wave of mental illness caused by amphetamine abuse which is caused by the governments policies of drug prohibition rather than the correct approach of harm minimisation.

Yes you raise some interesting, valid points Will,

but i don't agree that it is an excellent article, far from it

.....its just the latest installment in Reefer Madness Mk2 :sly

Man has been smoking dope for thousands of years, why is it that this connection between using marijuana and mental illness was unheard of, until the last 5 years?

I personally became aware of the link between cannabis usage and schizopheria over 15 years ago.

But some reasons most people are ingorant of this are,

1. Dont forget that marijuana has been for many years and still is now in this country a highly illegal substance. Government funding for research has hardly been forthcoming.

2. Most cannabis users who experience mental illness also use other drugs most notably alchohol , amphetamines and heroin. This makes it hard for anything other than a very well funded and detailed study to properly examine the causes.

(again the lack of government funding)

3. The causal link between cannabis usage and mental illness appears to only occur in a relatively small percentage of users.

4. The amount of crap that the anti cannabis brigade have been coming up with over the years. I can remember it being published as fact back in the 70's that smoking dope would make you grow breasts and increase the amount of female hormones in the body. These type of ravings degenerate any public debate on the issue.

The article on Erowid I found to be very factual on the issue, as with any substance cannabis can be harmful to a percentage of users. We cannot deny this, it is fact. This needs to be accepted before we can move to a more sane public debate. Harm minimisation is successful in other countries and that is the policy we should be pursuing here.
